Chawkay District
Chawkay District is situated in the central part of Kunar Province, Afghanistan. The population was reported in 2006 as 31,600. The district center is the village of Chawkay () at 726 m elevation in the valley of the Kunar River. Roughly 80% of the houses in the district were destroyed during the wars. Kunar Province
Kunar (Pashto: ; Dari: ) is one of the 34 provinces of Afghanistan, located in the northeastern part of the country. Its capital is Asadabad. Its population is estimated to be 508,224. Kunar's major political groups include Wahhabis or Ahl-e- Hadith, ''Nazhat-e Hambastagi Milli, Hezb-e Afghanistan Naween, Hezb-e Islami Gulbuddin''. It is one of the four " N2KL" provinces ( Nangarhar Province, Nuristan Province, Kunar Province and Laghman Province). Kunar River
The Kūnaṛ River ( ps, د کونړ سيند), also known in its upper reaches as the Mastuj ( ps, مستوج سين), Chitral ( khw, کونڑ سين; ur, دریائے کونڑ), or Kama River ( khw, کامې سين), is about long, located in eastern Afghanistan (Nuristan, Kunar, Nangarhar) and northern Pakistan (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa). It emerges just south of the Broghil Pass, in the upper part of Chitral District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa near the Afghan border. The river system is fed by melting glaciers and snow of the Hindu Kush mountains. The Kunar River is a tributary of the Kabul River, which is in turn a tributary of the Indus River. Origin and course of flow The river rises in the far north glaciated Hindu Kush mountains of Chitral, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. Kunar Raid
The Raid on Kunar was a NATO operation which took place on February 17, 2012. Six civilians, including a woman and a child, were killed in the airstrike and ground raid near the Dewa Gul Valley, "a Taliban stronghold in the Chawki district of Kunar province". Hundreds of Afghans in Chawki protested NATO's actions. President Hamid Karzai sent a delegation to investigate the incident; according to his office, witnesses confirmed that six civilians were killed in the action.
