Chatham is an unincorporated community in Medina County, Ohio, Medina County, in the U.S. state of Ohio. History Chatham was laid out in the 1830s, and named after Chatham, New York, the native home of a share of the first settlers. A variant name was Chatham Center. A post office called Chatham Centre was established in 1837, the name was changed to Chatham Center in 1893, and the post office closed in 1895. Besides the post office, Chatham had a country store, which opened around 1840. Medina County, Ohio
Medina County (pronounced ) is a county in the U.S. state of Ohio. As of the 2020 census, the population was 182,470. Its county seat is Medina. The county was created in 1812 and later organized in 1818. It is named for Medina, a city in Saudi Arabia. Medina County is part of the Cleveland-Elyria, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area, although parts of the county are included in the urbanized area of Akron. History Before European colonization, several Native American tribes inhabited northeastern Ohio. After Europeans first crossed into the Americas, the land that became Medina County was colonized by the French, becoming part of the colony of Canada (New France). Chatham is a town in Columbia County, New York, United States. The population was 4,104 at the 2020 census, down from the 2010 census. The town has a village also called Chatham on its southern town line. The town is at the northern border of Columbia County. History The early settlers were Dutch, but later Quakers and New Englanders arrived. The town of Chatham was formed from the towns of Canaan and Kinderhook in 1795. Contradictory of its current condition or image, Chatham was an industrial center of multiple inter-state rail lines in the early 1900s, including the junction of the Boston and Albany Railroad for connections east and west, the Rutland Railroad for connections to Vermont to the north, and the New York Central's Harlem Line for connections to New York City. Roscoe Wilfred Thatcher
Roscoe Wilfred Thatcher (c. 1872 − 6 December 1933) was an American agriculturist. He was born and raised on a farm in Chatham Center, Ohio, and studied at the University of Nebraska. He began his academic career at Washington State College, becoming head of the Department of Agriculture there. Biography Thatcher moved to the University of Minnesota in 1913, initially as head of the Department of Chemistry, and later as Dean of the Department of Agriculture. In 1921 he became director of the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station, and that year published a book, ''Chemistry of Plant Life''. Thatcher left New York to become the first president of Massachusetts State College, the new name for the Massachusetts Agricultural College. Thatcher was known for his studies of the chemistry of flour, and the chemistry of insecticides. In 1924 President Coolidge appointed him to the president's Agricultural Commission.
