Charlton County, GA
Charlton County is the southernmost county of the U.S. state of Georgia, located in the southeastern part of the state. As of the 2010 census, the population was 12,171. The county seat is Folkston. History Georgia, by an act of the Georgia General Assembly on February 18, 1854. The original county seat was at Trader's Hill, until 1901. Additional lands from Ware County, Georgia, were added to Charlton's borders by an 1855 act of the General Assembly. In 1856, an additional legislative act redefined the Charlton–Camden borders again with each county ceding land to the other. The county is named for Robert Milledge Charlton, a U. S. Senator from Georgia. Geography According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of , of which is land and (1.1%) is water. It is the fifth-largest county by area in Georgia. Charlton County Courthouse
The Charlton County Courthouse is located in Folkston, Georgia. It is in the Neoclassical style and was constructed in 1928 out of brick, stone, and concrete. The construction cost was $46,000 and the clock cost and additional $3,000. The total cost of the project was $54,000. It is the fourth courthouse built for this county and is built on the site of the previous courthouse, which was built in 1902 and burned in 1928. Georgia State Route 40
State Route 40 (SR 40) is a state highway in the southeast part of the U.S. state of Georgia. The highway travels from US 1/ US 23/ US 301/ SR 4/ SR 15 in Folkston east to Church Street in St. Marys. SR 40 is the primary east–west highway of eastern Charlton County and southern Camden County. The highway connects Folkston and St. Marys with Kingsland, where the highway meets Interstate 95 (I-95) and US 17/ SR 25. Except for its northernmost portion, it is completely concurrent for its entire length with U.S. Route 1 (US 1). U.S. Route 301 (US 301) is a spur of U.S. Route 1 running through the South Atlantic States. It runs from Biddles Corner, Delaware at Delaware Route 1 to Sarasota, Florida at U.S. Route 41.
