Charlotte-Campobello
Saint Croix is a provincial electoral district for the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick, Canada. The district includes the Town of St. Stephen and the Town of St. Andrews. It was created as Western Charlotte in 1994 by merging the old districts of Charlotte West and St. Stephen-Milltown save for Deer Island and Campobello Island which became part of Fundy Isles, the rather atypical name of "Western Charlotte" was chosen to prevent confusion with the old smaller district of "Charlotte West". The riding also added a small piece of territory from Charlotte Centre. In 2006, the district again added Campobello Island and the name was changed from Western Charlotte to Charlotte-Campobello. New Brunswick Electoral Redistribution, 2013
The 2013 New Brunswick electoral redistribution was undertaken through the process set out in the ''Electoral Boundaries and Representation Act'' of New Brunswick, Canada. The legislation establishes a statutory requirement for redistribution of electoral districts after every second New Brunswick general election. A commission was struck to draw 49 electoral districts, a decrease from 55 districts, which will first be used in the 2014 provincial election. The 49 boundaries will have to be within the range of 95% to 105% of the 1/49th of the number of registered voters in the province except in "extraordinary circumstances". Under the legislation, the commission will be chaired by one anglophone and one francophone and consist of 3 to 5 other commissioners, all of whom must be New Brunswick residents. John Ames (politician)
John B. Ames (born January 2, 1983 in Saint John, New Brunswick) is a Canadian politician, who was elected to the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick in the 2014 provincial election. He represented Saint Croix as a member of the Liberal Party, but was voted out by the people of Charlotte-Campobello / Saint Croix in the September 24, 2018 election, being replaced by Greg Thompson. He was appointed to the New Brunswick Cabinet on June 6, 2016 where he took on the portfolios of Tourism, Heritage and Culture. He sat on Her Majesty's Executive Council Office in his capacity as Minister of the Crown, serving on various committees. Tony Huntjens
Antoon J. "Tony" Huntjens (born January 1, 1939, in Limburg, Netherlands) is a former teacher and New Brunswick politician. A resident of St. Stephen, New Brunswick, where he taught High School for thirty-three years, he was a member of the Legislative Assembly of New Brunswick for the riding of Western Charlotte. In the fall of 1961, Huntjens became a Canadian citizen. He studied at the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton, graduating with a Bachelor of Teaching and a Bachelor of Education degree. He first became active in politics as a member of the Confederation of Regions Party of New Brunswick (CoR) and was the president of that organization and its candidate in Western Charlotte in the 1995 election. New Brunswick Electoral Redistribution, 2006
The 2006 New Brunswick electoral redistribution was undertaken as a result of legislation introduced by Bernard Lord, the Premier of New Brunswick, Canada, on June 9, 2005. The legislation establishes a statutory requirement for redistribution of electoral districts after every decennial Canadian census. The redistribution process set out in the legislation took approximately six months to complete, and was overseen by an independent commission. The bill introduced by the government would have required that 55 ridings be maintained with populations varying between 75% and 110% of 1/55 of the provincial population. The Opposition Liberals expressed a desire for the commission to have greater flexibility either in the variance of the average population or in the number of districts. Greg Thompson
Gregory Francis Thompson, (March 28, 1947 – September 10, 2019) was a Canadian politician who served six terms as a Member of Parliament (MP), and for one term he represented the district of Saint Croix in the New Brunswick Legislative Assembly, from 2018 until 2019. Political career Thompson was formerly a high school history teacher at Fundy High School from 1975–1980. Thompson, a high school teacher, a businessman and financial planner was first elected to the House of Commons of Canada in the 1988 Canadian federal election as a member of the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada. Campobello Island, New Brunswick
Campobello Island (, also ) is the largest and only inhabited island in Campobello, a civil parish in southwestern New Brunswick, Canada, near the border with Maine, United States. The island's permanent population in 2021 was 949. It is the site of the Roosevelt Campobello International Park and of Herring Cove Provincial Park. It has been governed as an incorporated rural community since 2010 but still receives some local service district (LSD) services from the province, being assessed for fire protection, policing, dog control, and general government, and is a member of the Southwest New Brunswick Service Commission (SNBSC). Deer Island, New Brunswick
Deer Island is one of the Fundy Islands in the Bay of Fundy, Canada. It is at the entrance to Passamaquoddy Bay. The island was first settled by colonists around 1770. Local government is provided by the West Isles Local Service District, which is within the Southwest NB Regional Service Commission. At 45 km2, it is the largest island in the West Isles Parish CSD, which had a 2021 population of 718. It has three communities: Fairhaven, Leonardville, and Lords Cove. There is a primary school on the island, while older pupils attend Fundy High School on the mainland. The economy is primarily fishing and aquaculture based although tourism is growing.
