Charlie Lister
Charles 'Charlie' Richard Lister OBE (born 1940) is a former English greyhound trainer. He is a four times winner of the Greyhound Trainer of the Year and is regarded as one of the leading trainers of all time. He also holds the record for English Greyhound Derby wins with seven. Early life He was born in Yorkshire and used to attend coursing with his father. He then owned some greyhounds with a trainer called Joe Booth who ran on the independent circuit, known as flapping (unregulated racing). Career After learning his trade on independent tracks he applied for a National Greyhound Racing Club C-licence. He was then gained a professional trainers licence and was awarded a contract at Leicester Stadium by Mick Wheble. His first breakthroughs were with Swift Band, who won the 1981 East Anglian Derby and Glamour Hobo who finished runner up in the 1985 Scottish Greyhound Derby. Greyhound Trainer
A greyhound trainer is a person who trains greyhounds for racing. This involves exercising, feeding, and grooming them in addition to keeping the greyhound in race condition to enable the greyhound to race to the best of its ability. History Before the 1930s nearly all greyhound racing was in the form of coursing but track racing was established in the United States in 1919 and Great Britain in 1927. Today the term 'greyhound trainer' refers mainly to track racing because coursing has been banned in many countries. Mick Wheble
Michael John Wheble MBE (born 1949) is a retired Racing Manager, marketing executive, author and charity advocate. Career He held the senior role, that of a Greyhound Board of Great Britain licensed Racing Manager at Leicester Stadium and Coventry Stadium before taking the position of Racing Manager at Oxford Stadium in the mid-eighties. He was instrumental in securing a first Bookmakers Afternoon Greyhound Service (BAGS) contract for Oxford and Ramsgate Stadium and then steered the company as the Group Racing Manager. In 2005 he was awarded the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the 2005 Birthday Honours for services to Greyhound Racing and to Charity. Sidaz Jack
Sidaz Jack (born 8 June 2011) is a white and blue male greyhound. He was owned by Daren Johnson and Simon Wooder, and trained by Charlie Lister. He won the English Greyhound Derby in 2013. His father was two time English Greyhound Derby winner Westmead Hawk. Racing career Sidaz Jack was sired by Westmead Hawk from the dam Ballaghboy Cool and was born on 8 June 2011. Westmead Hawk was a two-time English Greyhound Derby winner. Sidaz Jack has a white body with grey markings on the head. Sidaz Jack was entered into the 2013 English Greyhound Derby and won two of the qualifying races en route to the final. He went into the final race at odds of 6–1, behind the favourite Droopys Jet who was at 7–4. Taylors Sky
Taylors Sky (born 1 March 2009) is a white and blue male Greyhound. He is owned by Steve and Becky Taylor and was trained by Charlie Lister. He won the English Greyhound Derby in 2011, and was named Britain's Greyhound of the Year in 2011, having won thirteen of seventeen races entered during the season. His father was two-time English Greyhound Derby winner Westmead Hawk. His half-brother Sidaz Jack also won the English Greyhound Derby in 2013. 2010 English Greyhound Derby
The 2010 William Hill Greyhound Derby Final took place during April and May with the final being held on 29 May 2010 at Wimbledon Stadium. The competition was sponsored by William Hill following the end of the sponsorship deal with Blue Square. The winner Bandicoot Tipoki received £75,000. The event was still over 480 metres, but Wimbledon had switched the grandstand to the other side of the track creating a different course. Six rounds were to take place and the final saw the field finish within two lengths of each other. One greyhound, Lyreen Mover, kennelled at Tony Magnasco's in Oxfordshire, reached the final unbeaten under Hungarian trainer Gabor Tenczel. 2003 English Greyhound Derby
The 2003 William Hill Greyhound Derby took place during May and June with the final being held on 28 June 2003 at Wimbledon Stadium. The final resulted in the disqualification of Droopys Hewitt trained by Andy Iaonnou a first season trainer and former head man to Nick Savva. A sample taken by the stewards (the usual practice) in the third round was tested as positive and after a six-month court battle the National Greyhound Racing Club stewards finally prevailed and stripped the Derby title from Droopys Hewitt and awarded it to second place Farloe Verdict. The 2001 William Hill Greyhound Derby Final took place during May and June with the final being held on 2 June 2001 at Wimbledon Stadium. The winner received £75,000. Rapid Ranger successfully defended his title and became only the third greyhound in history to win the Derby twice, he was owned by Ray White and bred by Martin Broughan. Rapid Ranger
Rapid Ranger (11 January 1998 – 30 September 2010) was a male brindle Greyhound. He is best known for becoming only the third dog to win the English Greyhound Derby on more than one occasion. He also qualified for the finals of both the Scottish and Irish Greyhound Derbys. Racing career Ranger was defeated in his first two races as a puppy before winning a race whilst on the way to qualifying for the Puppy Classic final at the Nottingham Greyhound Stadium. Following a series of wins towards the end of 1999 he exchanged hands as Ray White after Ranger won at the Owlerton Stadium in Sheffield. White sent him to Charlie Lister, who became Ranger's new trainer. His first race at Wimbledon Stadium came in January 2000 when the dog was invited to compete in the Juvenile Championship.
