Charlie Daly
Charlie Daly (10 August 1896 – 14 March 1923), born in Castlemaine, Co. Kerry, was the second son of Con. W. Daly, of Knockanescoulten, Firies, County Kerry. He went to school, first to Balyfinane National School, and later to the Christian Brothers at Tralee. Daly had been an active member of the Irish Volunteers from 1913 before the Easter Rising and had risen to the rank of Commandant General and was the Officer Commanding (O/C) the Second Northern Division of the Irish Republican Army (IRA). Under the Defense of the Realm Act (D.O.R.A.) he was incarcerated at Cork Male Prison 1918-1919 for unlawful assembly; specifically "throwing stones at the police". In his wound pension application of 1937 IRA leader George Lennon noted Daly as O/C of No. 10 Wing. A "smash up strike" in the jail resulted in solitary confinement and ill treatment for the men. County Kerry
County Kerry ( gle, Contae Chiarraí) is a county in Ireland. It is located in the South-West Region and forms part of the province of Munster. It is named after the Ciarraige who lived in part of the present county. Patrick Daly is an Irish Sinn Féin politician who has been a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Kerry constituency since the 2020 general election. He qualified as a solicitor in 1996, he worked in the United States before moving to Dublin. He returned to Tralee, establishing his own solicitor's practice. Joseph Sweeney (Irish Politician)
Joseph Aloysius Sweeney (13 June 1897 – 25 November 1980) was an Irish politician and military commander. He fought in the Easter Rising in the GPO and was a member of the IRA during the war of independence. He later became Chief of Staff of the Irish Army. Background Sweeney was born and raised in Burtonport, a town in The Rosses, a district in the west of County Donegal. He was the son of general merchant John Sweeney and Margaret O'Donnell. A court-martial or court martial (plural ''courts-martial'' or ''courts martial'', as "martial" is a postpositive adjective) is a military court or a trial conducted in such a court. A court-martial is empowered to determine the guilt of members of the armed forces subject to military law, and, if the defendant is found guilty, to decide upon punishment. In addition, courts-martial may be used to try prisoners of war for war crimes. Drumboe Castle
Drumboe Castle was located on the outskirts of Stranorlar, a small town in County Donegal in Ulster, Ireland. Early history In 1622, during the Plantation of Ulster, Robert Redington sold the estate at Ballybofey to Sir Ralph Bingley. Bingley erected the original Drumboe Castle, which had four large towers. Its location protected a ford across the River Finn. After the death of Sir Ralph Bingley, his widow Lady Jane and Robert Harrington took charge until 1641, when it was granted to Sir William Bazil, Attorney-General for Ireland. He died in 1693. A descendant of Sir William Bazil was William Basil (who was born William Ball and changed name to Basil). Basil married Frances Dowdeswell around 1736. The Troubles In Northern Ireland (1920–1922)
The Troubles of the 1920s was a period of conflict in what is now Northern Ireland from June 1920 until June 1922, during and after the Irish War of Independence and the partition of Ireland. It was mainly a communal conflict between Protestant Unionists, who wanted to remain part of the United Kingdom, and Catholic Irish nationalists, who backed Irish independence. During this time period more than 500 people were killed in Belfast alone, 23,000 people were made homeless in Belfast while approximately 50,000 people fled the north of Ireland due to intimidation. Most of the victims came from the Catholic minority. Pomeroy, County Tyrone
Pomeroy is a small village and civil parish in County Tyrone, Northern Ireland. It is in the townland of Cavanakeeran, about from Cookstown, from Dungannon and from Omagh.
