Charles Sams
Charles F. Sams III is an American government official who is the director of the National Park Service, the first Native American to serve in the role. He is also a member of the Northwest Power and Conservation Council. Early life and education A native of Pendleton, Oregon, Sams graduated from Pendleton High School in 1988. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration from Concordia University in 2003 and a Master of Legal Studies from the University of Oklahoma College of Law in 2020. Career From 1988 to 1992, Sams served as an intelligence specialist in the United States Navy, where he was assigned to VA-128, Carrier Air Wing Two, Joint Intelligence Center, and the Defense Intelligence Agency Headquarters. Concordia University (Oregon)
Concordia University was a private Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod (LCMS) university in Portland, Oregon, that closed in Spring 2020. One remaining program, the accelerated bachelor's degree in nursing, continues to operate under another Concordia University System school. Opened in 1905 as a University-preparatory school, the institution added college classes in 1950 and the high school formally split from the college in 1977. The school of approximately 5,400 undergraduate and graduate students was affiliated with the LCMS and the Concordia University System. Confederated Tribes Of The Umatilla Indian Reservation
The Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation are the federally recognized confederations of three Sahaptin-speaking Native American tribes who traditionally inhabited the Columbia River Plateau region: the Cayuse, Umatilla, and Walla Walla. When the leaders of the Walla Walla, Cayuse, and Umatilla peoples signed the Treaty of Walla Walla with the United States in 1855, they ceded of their homeland that is now northeastern Oregon and southeastern Washington. This was done in exchange for a reservation of and the promise of annuities in the form of goods and supplies. Walla Walla (), Walawalałáma ("People of Walula region along Walla Walla River"), sometimes Walúulapam, are a Sahaptin indigenous people of the Northwest Plateau. The duplication in their name expresses the diminutive form. The name ''Walla Walla'' is translated several ways but most often as "many waters". Many Walla Wallas live on the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation. Cayuse People
The Cayuse are a Native American tribe in what is now the state of Oregon in the United States. The Cayuse tribe shares a reservation and government in northeastern Oregon with the Umatilla and the Walla Walla tribes as part of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation. The reservation is located near Pendleton, Oregon, at the base of the Blue Mountains. The Cayuse called themselves the ''Liksiyu'' in the Cayuse language. Originally located in present-day northeastern Oregon and southeastern Washington, they lived adjacent to territory occupied by the Nez Perce and had close associations with them. Katherine Brown (born June 21, 1960) is an American politician and attorney serving as the 38th governor of Oregon since 2015.
