Charles Sams
Charles F. Sams III is an American government official who is the director of the National Park Service, the first Native American to serve in the role. He is also a member of the Northwest Power and Conservation Council. Early life and education A native of Pendleton, Oregon, Sams graduated from Pendleton High School in 1988. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration from Concordia University in 2003 and a Master of Legal Studies from the University of Oklahoma College of Law in 2020. Career From 1988 to 1992, Sams served as an intelligence specialist in the United States Navy, where he was assigned to VA-128, Carrier Air Wing Two, Joint Intelligence Center, and the Defense Intelligence Agency Headquarters. After leaving the Navy, Sams was a data analyst and spokesman for the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation. Concordia University (Oregon)
Concordia University was a private Lutheran Church–Missouri Synod (LCMS) university in Portland, Oregon, that closed in Spring 2020. One remaining program, the accelerated bachelor's degree in nursing, continues to operate under another Concordia University System school. Opened in 1905 as a University-preparatory school, the institution added college classes in 1950 and the high school formally split from the college in 1977. The school of approximately 5,400 undergraduate and graduate students was affiliated with the LCMS and the Concordia University System. Located in northeast Portland, the school had branch campuses across Oregon and operated the Concordia University School of Law in Boise, Idaho. The university had four colleges and eighteen majors. Confederated Tribes Of The Umatilla Indian Reservation
The Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation are the federally recognized confederations of three Sahaptin-speaking Native American tribes who traditionally inhabited the Columbia River Plateau region: the Cayuse, Umatilla, and Walla Walla. When the leaders of the Walla Walla, Cayuse, and Umatilla peoples signed the Treaty of Walla Walla with the United States in 1855, they ceded of their homeland that is now northeastern Oregon and southeastern Washington. This was done in exchange for a reservation of and the promise of annuities in the form of goods and supplies. The tribes share the Reservation, which consists of in Umatilla County, in northeast Oregon state. The tribes have created a joint political structure as part of their confederation.
