Charles S. McCullough House
Charles S. McCullough House, also known as the Memorial Center, is a historic home located at Darlington, Darlington County, South Carolina. It was built in 1889, and is a -story, brick Second Empire style residence. It has a projecting one-story ell and a porch on three sides. The front porch has elaborate sawn brackets on paired turned posts and an ornamental balustrade. The front elevation features a steeply pitched gable, which rises above the top of the mansard roof. Second Empire Architecture
Second Empire style, also known as the Napoleon III style, is a highly eclectic style of architecture and decorative arts, which uses elements of many different historical styles, and also made innovative use of modern materials, such as iron frameworks and glass skylights. It flourished during the reign of Emperor Napoleon III in France (1852–1871) and had an important influence on architecture and decoration in the rest of Europe and North America. Mansard Roof
A mansard or mansard roof (also called a French roof or curb roof) is a four-sided gambrel-style hip roof characterised by two slopes on each of its sides, with the lower slope, punctured by dormer windows, at a steeper angle than the upper. The steep roof with windows creates an additional floor of habitable space (a garret), and reduces the overall height of the roof for a given number of habitable storeys.
