Charles Herbert (1743–1816)
Charles Herbert (1743–1816) was a Royal Navy officer and British politician who sat in the House of Commons as Member of Parliament for Wilton from 1775 to 1780, then 1807 to 1816. Herbert was the second son of the Hon. William Herbert and his wife Catherine Elizabeth Tewes of Aix-la-Chapelle and was baptized on 28 May 1743. His elder brother was Henry Herbert, 1st Earl of Carnarvon. He was probably educated at Eton College from 1753 to 1754 and subsequently joined the Royal Navy becoming lieutenant in 1761, commander in 1765 and captain in 1768. In July 1775, he married Lady Caroline Montagu (1745-1818), daughter of Robert Montagu, 3rd Duke of Manchester;the couple had no children. Herbert was returned as MP for Wilton, previously held by his father from 1734 to 1757; he was selected to stand for the constituency at a bye-election on 20 February 1775 by his cousin, Henry Herbert, 10th Earl of Pembroke, who controlled the seat. George Herbert, 11th Earl Of Pembroke
General George Augustus Herbert, 11th Earl of Pembroke and 8th Earl of Montgomery (10 September 1759 – 26 October 1827) was an English peer, army officer, and politician. Early life He was born Lord Herbert at the family home, Wilton House in Wilton. He was the only son of Henry Herbert, 10th Earl of Pembroke and 7th Earl of Montgomery and his wife, Elizabeth, the second daughter of Charles Spencer, 3rd Duke of Marlborough. He had a younger sister Charlotte, who died at the age of 10. He was educated at home and then Harrow School from 1770 to 1775. Through his grandmother Mary FitzWilliam, daughter of the 5th Viscount FitzWilliam, he inherited the substantial FitzWilliam estates in Dublin. James Edward Harris, 2nd Earl of Malmesbury (19 August 1778 – 10 September 1841) was a British peer, styled Viscount FitzHarris from 1800 to 1820. Early life Though the son of a great British statesman, James Harris, 1st Earl of Malmesbury, and the former Harriet Maria Amyand (1761–1830). Among his siblings were the Rev. Hon. Charles Herbert (5 July 1774 – 12 September 1808) was a British Royal Navy officer and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1806 to 1807. Family Charles Herbert was the second son of Henry Herbert, 1st Earl of Carnarvon, and Lady Elizabeth Alicia Maria Wyndham. He married The Honourable Bridget Augusta Byng, daughter of John Byng, 5th Viscount Torrington on 9 July 1806. Naval career Herbert entered the navy at an early age and was Midshipman in 1790, Lieutenant in 1793 and Commander in 1794 when he was in command of the Resource in the West Indies. His father's 'never-ceasing importunities and remonstrances' resulted in his promotion a year later in 1795 to the rank of post-captain, He enjoyed a successful series of frigate commands. Ralph Sheldon (1623–1684) was an English Roman Catholic Royalist and an antiquary. In his will he bequeathed his library and manuscripts to the College of Arms, his country's authority over heraldry and pedigree. Family Sheldon was born on 1 August 1623 at Beoley, Worcestershire, the eldest son of the landowner William Sheldon (1589–1659) of Beoley and of Weston in Long Compton, Warwickshire, and his wife Elizabeth (1592–1656), daughter of William, Lord Petre. He was a nephew of Edward Sheldon, a translator of Catholic religious works. The family was among the wealthiest gentry in the region, but their Catholicism precluded them from prominence in public life. William Gerard Hamilton (28 January 172916 July 1796), was an English statesman and Irish politician, popularly known as "Single Speech Hamilton". Biography He was born in London, the son of William Hamilton, a Scottish bencher of Lincoln's Inn, and succeeded his father in 1754. He was educated at Winchester, Lincoln's Inn and Oriel College, Oxford. With his father's fortune he entered political life and became Member of Parliament for Petersfield in Hampshire. His maiden speech, delivered on 13 November 1755, during the debate on the address, which excited Walpole's admiration, is generally supposed to have been his only effort in the House of Commons. But the nickname "Single Speech" is undoubtedly misleading, and Hamilton is known to have spoken with success on other occasions, both in the House of Commons and in the Irish parliament.
