Charles Herbert (Royal Navy Officer)
Charles Herbert (5 July 1774 – 12 September 1808) was a British Royal Navy officer and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1806 to 1807. Family Charles Herbert was the second son of Henry Herbert, 1st Earl of Carnarvon, and Lady Elizabeth Alicia Maria Wyndham. He married The Honourable Bridget Augusta Byng, daughter of John Byng, 5th Viscount Torrington on 9 July 1806. Naval career Herbert entered the navy at an early age and was Midshipman in 1790, Lieutenant in 1793 and Commander in 1794 when he was in command of the Resource in the West Indies. His father's 'never-ceasing importunities and remonstrances' resulted in his promotion a year later in 1795 to the rank of post-captain, He enjoyed a successful series of frigate commands. He commanded the 28-gun sixth rate ''Amphitrite'', and the frigates ''Amelia'' and ''Uranie''. Charles Herbert (1743–1816)
Charles Herbert (1743–1816) was a Royal Navy officer and British politician who sat in the House of Commons as Member of Parliament for Wilton from 1775 to 1780, then 1807 to 1816. Herbert was the second son of the Hon. William Herbert and his wife Catherine Elizabeth Tewes of Aix-la-Chapelle and was baptized on 28 May 1743. His elder brother was Henry Herbert, 1st Earl of Carnarvon. He was probably educated at Eton College from 1753 to 1754 and subsequently joined the Royal Navy becoming lieutenant in 1761, commander in 1765 and captain in 1768. In July 1775, he married Lady Caroline Montagu (1745-1818), daughter of Robert Montagu, 3rd Duke of Manchester;the couple had no children. Herbert was returned as MP for Wilton, previously held by his father from 1734 to 1757; he was selected to stand for the constituency at a bye-election on 20 February 1775 by his cousin, Henry Herbert, 10th Earl of Pembroke, who controlled the seat. James Edward Harris, 2nd Earl of Malmesbury (19 August 1778 – 10 September 1841) was a British peer, styled Viscount FitzHarris from 1800 to 1820. Early life Though the son of a great British statesman, James Harris, 1st Earl of Malmesbury, and the former Harriet Maria Amyand (1761–1830). Among his siblings were the Rev. Hon. Thomas Alfred Harris, Rector of Hartley, Lady Catherine Harris (wife of Gen. Sir John Bell), and Lady Frances Harris (wife of Lt.-Gen. Hon. Sir Galbraith Lowry Cole, second son of William Cole, 1st Earl of Enniskillen). The 1807 United Kingdom general election was the third general election to be held after the Union of Great Britain and Ireland. The third United Kingdom Parliament was dissolved on 29 April 1807. The new Parliament was summoned to meet on 22 June 1807, for a maximum seven-year term from that date. The maximum term could be and normally was curtailed, by the monarch dissolving the Parliament, before its term expired.
