Charles Fitzsimmons (politician)
Charles Fitzsimmons (1802—1876) was an Irish-born politician and sugar farmer in Queensland, Australia. He was a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly. Early life Charles Fitzsimmons was born in 1802 in County Cavan, Ireland, the son of James Fitzsimmons and his wife Margaret (née Lynch). Politics Fitzsimmons was elected as Member for Port Curtis in the Queensland Legislative Assembly at the inaugural colonial election on 4 May 1860. He held that seat until he resigned on 3 September 1861; Alfred Sandeman won the resulting by-election on 15 October 1861. Under the Additional Members Act 1864, the seats of Clermont, Kennedy, Maryborough, Mitchell, Rockhampton and Warrego were created. By-elections were held to fill the new seats on 18 March 1865. Fitzsimmons was elected in Rockhampton. He held the seat until the 1867 election on 27 June at which he did not contest the seat, saying he desired to retire from public life. Electoral District Of Port Curtis
Port Curtis was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland from 1860 to 1992. The district was named after the harbour at Port Curtis, and centred on the regional city of Gladstone. In 1992, it was renamed Gladstone. Kennedy was an electoral district of the Legislative Assembly in the Australian state of Queensland. History In 1864, the ''Additional Members Act'' created six additional electoral districts, each returning 1 member: * Clermont * Kennedy * Maryborough * Mitchell * Rockhampton * Warrego The first elections in these six electorates were held in 1865 (that is, during a parliamentary term and not as part of a general election across Queensland). The nomination date for the election in Kennedy was 18 February 1865 and the election was held on 18 March 1865. When first constituted, Kennedy covered an area from Cardwell to Mackay, west to the Great Dividing Range, taking in the entire Burdekin River system. The district covered the north Queensland coast from Mackay to Hinchinbrook Island. It was named for the explorer Edmund Kennedy. ''The Queenslander'' was the weekly summary and literary edition of the '' Brisbane Courier'', the leading journal in the colony—and later, federal state—of Queensland since the 1850s. ''The Queenslander'' was launched by the Brisbane Newspaper Company in 1866, and discontinued in 1939. History ''The Queenslander'' was first published on 3 February 1866 in Brisbane by Thomas Blacket Stephens. The last edition was printed on 22 February 1939. In a country the size of Australia, a daily newspaper of some prominence could only reach the bush and outlying districts if it also published a weekly edition. Yet ''The Queenslander'', under the managing editorship of Gresley Lukin—managing editor from November 1873 until December 1880—also came to find additional use as a literary magazine. ''The Morning Bulletin'' is an online newspaper servicing the city of Rockhampton and the surrounding areas of Central Queensland, Australia. From 1861 to 2020, ''The Morning Bulletin'' was published as a print edition, before then becoming an exclusively online newspaper. The final print edition was published on 27 June 2020. History The first issue of ''The Bulletin'' was launched on 9 July 1861. It is the second oldest business in Rockhampton, the oldest being the Criterion Hotel which was established in October 1860. The founder and original owner, William Hitchcock Buzacott (1831–1880, brother of Charles Hardie Buzacott), brought the press and equipment from Sydney in 1861 where he operated a small weekly paper. At the time the paper was called the Rockhampton Bulletin and was eagerly read by the town's 698 residents. Archibald Archer
Archibald Archer M.L.A., J.P., (18 March 1820 – 6 February 1902) was a Queensland politician, a Member of the Queensland Legislative Assembly, and Treasurer of Queensland. He was one of the Archer brothers, an early Queensland pioneering family. Personal life Archibald Archer was born in Fife, Scotland on 18 March 1820, the son of William Archer, of Larvik, Norway. At age 5, Archer went with his father to Norway and was educated in Norway. Later he spent five years in an engineering establishment in Scotland. Archer emigrated to Australia, where he arrived in 1842, but only stayed five months, subsequently spending thirteen years in the South Sea and Sandwich Islands. In the latter he was engaged on coffee and sugar plantations. Returning to Queensland in 1860, Archer took up his residence at Gracemere station. In 1896, Archer left Australia and died at the family's Norwegian estate, Tolderedden, Larvik, Norway on 6 February 1902 aged 81 years.Death certificate for Arch ...
