Charles Feltman
__FORCETOC__ Charles Feltman (1841–1910) was a German-American restaurateur. He is one of several claimed inventors of the hot dog. From pushcart to restaurant mogul Feltman was born in 1841 in Germany and emigrated to America in 1856, at the age of fifteen. He was familiar with the frankfurter, named for Frankfurt-am-Main in his native land. Feltman's operation began operating a pushcart pie wagon at the Coney Island beach in 1867, selling fresh pies to beachfront hotels. When his customers began asking him to add sandwiches to serve as well he added a small charcoal stove to his cart and began selling pork sausages on rolls which he called "red hots" and later "hot dogs." Henry Collins Brown, a New York historian, explained its attraction: "It could be carried on the march, eaten on the sands between baths, consumed on a carousel, used as a baby's nipple to quiet an obstreperous infant, and had other economic appeals to the summer pleasure seeker". A hot dog (uncommonly spelled hotdog) is a food consisting of a grilled or steamed sausage served in the slit of a partially sliced Hot dog bun, bun. The term hot dog can refer to the sausage itself. The East Village is a neighborhood on the East Side of Lower Manhattan in New York City. It is roughly defined as the area east of the Bowery and Third Avenue, between 14th Street on the north and Houston Street on the south. BB Gun
A BB gun is a type of air gun designed to shoot metallic spherical projectiles called BBs (not to be confused with similar-looking bearing balls), which are approximately the same size as BB-size lead birdshot used on shotguns ( in diameter). The Shooting Star Tommy Gun is a pneumatic machine gun manufactured by Shooting Star Inc. It was invented by Charles A. Feltman, the grandson of Charles Feltman, often credited as the inventor of the hot dog in Coney Island, New York with young Feltman previously inventing a hot dog roll toaster. The first version of the game was called "Mow 'Em Down" and featured a pneumatic machine gun resembling a water cooled heavy machine gun and was invented in 1939. Later Feltman modified the design to resemble a Thompson submachine gun with a patent granted in 1941 The weapon fires 100 .150 BBs, made of #2 lead shot. Astroland
Astroland was a amusement park in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York City that first opened in 1962. It was located at 1000 Surf Avenue (at the corner of West 10th Street) on the boardwalk. It ceased operations on September 7, 2008. History Astroland was first built as a "space-age" theme park when it opened in 1962, although in later years "a visit asmore like stepping into the past than the future." Some of the later rides were similar to regular carnival rides, but others offered a kitsch experience that was lacking in modern amusement parks. Alvan Kallman
Alvan Edward Kallman (March 13, 1902 – September 1, 1964) was an American hotelier. Kallman was born in New York City to Charles Kallman and Regina Kallman. His father died when he was ten or eleven. Kallman was a barnstorming pilot and later an air mail pilot in the early 20th century. After retiring from flying, he worked for the Hotel St. George in New York, serving as banquet manager from 1930 to 1939 (being the youngest banquet manager in the industry when appointed), then serving as general manager from 1939 to 1943. Kallman then became owner of The Balsams Grand Resort Hotel in Dixville Notch, New Hampshire and in 1946 part-owner (with Benno Bechhold and Harry Socoloff) of Feltman's, the large iconic complex at Coney Island containing the world's largest restaurant and other attractions, buying it from founder Charles Feltman's family.
