Charles Delafaye
Charles Delafaye (1677 – 11 December 1762) was Member of the Parliament of Ireland for Belturbet from 1715 to 1727 and Chief Secretary to the Earl of Galway and the Duke of Grafton who held joint Governorship. Delafaye shared his that role with Martin Bladen. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1725. He was appointed a Clerk of the Signet The Clerks of the Signet were English officials who played an intermediate role in the passage of letters patent through the seals. The Parliament of Ireland ( ga, Parlaimint na hÉireann) was the legislature of the Lordship of Ireland, and later the Kingdom of Ireland, from 1297 until 1800. It was modelled on the Parliament of England and from 1537 comprised two chambers: the House of Commons and the House of Lords. The Lords were members of the Irish peerage (’lords temporal’) and bishops (’ lords spiritual’; after the Reformation, Church of Ireland bishops). The Commons was directly elected, albeit on a very restricted franchise. Humphrey Butler, 1st Earl of Lanesborough (c. 1700 – 11 April 1768) was an Ireland, Irish politician. Butler was appointed High Sheriff for County Cavan in 1727 and High Sheriff of Westmeath in 1728. Brinsley Butler, 1st Viscount Lanesborough (1670–6 March 1735) was an Irish politician and peer. Butler was the son of Francis Butler and Judith Jones. He represented Kells in the Irish House of Commons between 1703 and 1713, before sitting for Belturbet from 1713 to 1724. Upon the death of his brother Theophilus Butler on 11 March 1724 he succeeded to his peerage and assumed his seat in the Irish House of Lords. Belturbet was a constituency represented in the Irish House of Commons from 1611 to 1800. In the Patriot Parliament of 1689 summoned by James II, Belturbet was represented with two members. Between 1725 and 1793 Catholics and those married to Catholics could not vote. It was in the control of the Earl of Lanesborough.
