Charles Clifford (locomotive Engineer)
Charles Clifford was locomotive superintendent of the Great Northern Railway (Ireland), Great Northern Railway of Ireland (GNRI) from 1895 to 1912. Clifford is attributed with increasing the size and power of the GNRI locomotive stock to match the increasing length and weight of train loads in this period; producing locomotives of that stood comparison with those of the Great Southern and Western Railway. Biography Clifford began his railway career as an apprentice to Grand Canal Street railway works#Locomotive superintendents, Samuel Wilfred Haughton, leaving the Dublin, Wicklow and Wexford Railway in 1861. At the Irish North Western Railway (INWR) in Dundalk he became Locomotive Superintendent. On the amalgamation on the INWR to the GNR he transferred to the new company under J.C. Park. On Park's retirement in 1895 Clifford took the position of Locomotive Superintendent of the GNR. Clifford retired from the GNR in 1912. He died on 5 September 1927. References

The Great Northern Railway (Ireland) (GNR(I) or GNRI) was an Irish gauge () railway company in Ireland. It was formed in 1876 by a merger of the Irish North Western Railway (INW), Northern Railway of Ireland, and Ulster Railway. The governments of Ireland and Northern Ireland jointly nationalised the company in 1953, and the company was liquidated in 1958: assets were split on national lines between the Ulster Transport Authority and Córas Iompair Éireann. Foundation The Ulster, D&D and D&BJct railways together formed the main line between Dublin and Belfast, with the D&BJct completing the final section in 1852 to join the Ulster at . The Great Southern and Western Railway (GS&WR) was an Irish gauge () railway company in Ireland from 1844 until 1924. The GS&WR grew by building lines and making a series of takeovers, until in the late 19th and early 20th centuries it was the largest of Ireland's "Big Four" railway networks. At its peak the GS&WR had an network, of which were double track. The core of the GS&WR was the Dublin Kingsbridge – main line; Ireland's "Premier Line", and still one of her most important main line railways. The company's headquarters were at Kingsbridge station. Grand Canal Street Railway Works
Grand Canal Street railway works, also known as ''The Factory'', served the Dublin and Kingstown Railway (D&KR), its successors the Dublin, Wicklow and Wexford Railway (DW&WR) and the Dublin and South Eastern Railway (DSER). It was preceded by a small "engine hospital" maintenance depot at Serpentine Avenue. History The D&KR had initially set up an "Engine Hospital" for the servicing of locomotives at Serpentine Avenue, about south west of past the River Dodder where railway cottages were subsequently built. The Serpentine depot had two sections, one for the three engines from Robert Sharps, initially supported by their engineer Francis Wrigley, and the three from Forresters supported by their man Alexander Allan. Irish North Western Railway (INW) was an Irish gauge () railway company in Ireland. Development The company was founded as the Dundalk and Enniskillen Railway (D&ER) and opened the first section of its line, from to , in 1849. In Dundalk the D&ER line crossed the Dublin and Belfast Junction Railway main line, which was completed between and its own separate station in the same year. The D&ER extended westwards, reaching in 1854, in 1855 and in 1858. In 1859 the D&ER reached where it connected with the Londonderry and Enniskillen Railway (L&ER).
