Charles Caldwell Ryrie
Charles Caldwell Ryrie (March 2, 1925 – February 16, 2016) was an American Bible scholar and Christian theologian. He served as professor of systematic theology and dean of doctoral studies at Dallas Theological Seminary and as president and professor at what is now Cairn University. After his retirement from Dallas Theological Seminary he also taught courses for Tyndale Theological Seminary. He is considered one of the most influential American theologians of the 20th century. He was the editor of ''The Ryrie Study Bible'' by Moody Publishers, containing more than 10,000 of Ryrie's explanatory notes. First published in 1978, it has sold more than 2 million copies. He was a notable proponent of classic premillennial dispensationalism. Systematic theology, or systematics, is a discipline of Christian theology that formulates an orderly, rational, and coherent account of the doctrines of the Christian faith. It addresses issues such as what the Bible teaches about certain topics or what is true about God and His universe. Westmont College
Westmont College is a private Christian liberal arts college in Montecito, California. It was founded in 1937. History Ruth Kerr, owner and CEO of the Kerr Glass Manufacturing Company, established the school as the Bible Missionary Institute in 1937 on the former Westlake School for Girls campus near Downtown Los Angeles. It was renamed the Western Bible College in 1939. During these early years, Kerr and the other founders decided that a liberal arts curriculum was the best direction for the school. ''Basic Theology'' (1986, 1999) is a Systematic Theology book written by Christian author Charles Caldwell Ryrie and published by Moody Publishers. Written for the layman, the book makes a conscious effort to use simple language and examples, many illustrations, and few footnotes. ''Basic Theology'' is written from a theologically conservative perspective. It assumes a number of presuppositions, including the inerrancy of Scripture, a normal/plain interpretation of scripture, and the legitimacy of proof texts. Ryrie's theology stems from an approach to Scripture, claiming that "when objective authority is supplemented, compromised, or abandoned, theism will be weakened or even relinquished."Ryrie 1999, p.23.
