Charles Austin (lawyer)
Charles Austin (1799–1874) was an English lawyer, prominent in the Railway Mania of the later 1840s. Early life Austin was the second son of Jonathan Austin, of Creeting Mill, in the county of Suffolk; John Austin was his elder brother. He was educated at Bury St Edmunds Grammar School. He was for a time apprenticed to a surgeon at Norwich, but was then sent to Jesus College, Cambridge in 1819. In 1822 he won the Hulsean prize for an essay on Christian evidence. In 1824 he graduated B.A. According to John Stuart Mill, Austin as undergraduate was an influential exponent of the ideas of Jeremy Bentham; and he had a reputation for brilliance as one of a group of contemporaries that included Thomas Babington Macaulay, Winthrop Mackworth Praed, John Moultrie, Edward Strutt, John Romilly, Charles Buller, and Alexander James Edmund Cockburn. Charles Austin (born Charles Reynolds; 4 April 1878 – 14 January 1942) was an English music hall comedian. He was born in London, and started performing in music halls in 1896, initially as one half of a double act, Lytton and Austin. Charles Allphin Austin (June 3, 1892 – March 15, 1980) was an American rugby union player, official, and coach who played center for the United States men's national team in its first two capped matches in 1912 and 1913. Austin also served as coach of the United States team that won the gold medal at the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris. Biography Charles Austin was born on June 3, 1892, in Bellingham, Washington, the son of William Charles Austin. Austin attended Berkeley High School, where he played for the school's rugby team and was named to a regional all-star team following the 1911 season. By 1912, he had joined the Olympic Club and played in the team's match against Australia during their 1912 tour of the United States and Canada. Charles Austin (1944–2018) was an American journalist who worked for WBZ-TV from 1968 to 2000. He was one of the first African-Americans to appear on local news in Boston. Early life Austin was born in Worcester, Massachusetts on November 22, 1944. He was the youngest of four children born to Marion Austin. His father Charles Bray Austin of Montgomery, Alabama, came home from WWII with injuries which left him with severe brain trauma; he subsequently died in 1969 in a Veterans Hospital in Bedford, Massachusetts without ever meeting his son. Charles graduated from Ayer High School in 1962 and attended the New England Conservatory of Music before dropping out to sing full-time. He opened for Bill Cosby at The Bitter End and sang on the same card as Nina Simone. Charles Austin is an American former professional wrestler. He had been a college football standout at the University of North Carolina and after graduating, developed an interest in professional wrestling, starting his own small promotion in his hometown. In December 1990, after having trained for six months, Austin traveled to a WWE, World Wrestling Federation (WWF) show in Tampa, Florida, where he approached WWF staff and offered his services as a Job (professional wrestling), jobber, a wrestler whose job is to lose to a promotion's major stars and promote their image. He was subsequently assigned to work a tag-team match with Lanny Poffo against Marty Jannetty and Shawn Michaels, who at the time were known as the Rockers. Charles Allen Austin (born December 19, 1967) is an American athlete who won the gold medal in the men's high jump at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. He was inducted into the United States Track & Field Hall of Fame in 2012. Currently, Charles and Javier Sotomayor are the only two high jumpers that have won gold medals in the Olympics, Outdoor World Championships, Indoor World Championships and World Cup Championships. Hennadiy Avdyeyenko, who won the inaugural 1983 Outdoor World Championship setting the championship high jump record with a jump of 2.32m (7' 7 1/4"), and Charles are the only two high jumpers to win and establish the championship record in both the Outdoor World Championship and Olympic Games.
