Chapter Four Uganda
Chapter Four Uganda is an independent non-profit human rights organization in Kampala Uganda dedicated to the protection of civil liberties and human rights protection. It was founded in April 2013 by Nicholas Opiyo. It derives its name from the bill of rights contained under chapter four of the constitution of the republic of Uganda. Focus Chapter Four Uganda focuses on civic space, digital rights, equality and non-discrimination, and LGBT rights. It has a mission of providing a robust, strategic and non-discriminatory legal response to the abuse of civil liberties. Chapter Four also focuses on traditionally under represented and under served groups and individuals in the community, for example, it provides free legal representation to the vulnerable and marginalized communities like the LGBTQ+. Kampala (, ) is the capital and largest city of Uganda. The city proper has a population of 1,680,000 and is divided into the five political divisions of Kampala Central Division, Kawempe Division, Makindye Division, Nakawa Division, and Rubaga Division. Kampala's metropolitan area consists of the city proper and the neighboring Wakiso District, Mukono District, Mpigi District, Buikwe District and Luweero District. Nicholas Opiyo
Nicholas Opiyo (born November 15, 1980) is a Ugandan human rights lawyer and campaigner for civil rights and political freedoms. He is the executive director of Chapter Four Uganda. Background and education Opiyo grew up in Gulu northern Uganda at the height of the conflict between the government of Uganda and the Lord's resistance army of Joseph Kony. Many of his friends and family members including his sister were abducted by the rebels to serve as slaves, soldiers and labourers. His sister spent 8 years in the hands of the rebels before she escaped. Opiyo once confessed he feared sleeping home and slept on streets because they seemed safer. All these experiences shaped his passion for defending human rights. He studied his bachelor's of law (LLB) from Uganda Christian University in 2004 and a post graduate diploma in legal practice from Law Development Center Kampala in 2005. Constitution Of Uganda
The Constitution of Uganda is the supreme law of Uganda. The fourth and current constitution was promulgated on 8 October 1995. It sanctions a republican form of government with a powerful President. First constitution (1962–1966) The first constitution of Uganda was the product of the Ugandan Constitutional Conference and took effect at the moment of independence (9 October 1962). It provided for a system of Parliamentary democracy underpinned by constitutional supremacy.
