Chapel Langley, Luton
Chapel Langley is an inner city district of Luton, just south west of the town centre, in Bedfordshire, England. It is roughly bounded by Regent Street and Adelaide Street to the north, Wilsden Avenue and Bolingbroke Road to the south, Milton Road, Napier Road, and Grove Road to the west, and Castle Street and London Road to the east. Chapel Langley is one of the oldest areas of the now sprawling conurbation of Luton. On the edge of the town centre, the area contains 19th century terraced housing, churches and pubs, as well as some newer inter-war and post-war housing and flats. Politics Chapel Langley is part of South ward, which is represented by Cllr David Agbley (Labour), Cllr Fatima Begum (Labour) and Cllr Javeria Hussain (Labour). South, Luton
South is the name for a ward in the southern part of Luton, in the Luton district, in the ceremonial county of Bedfordshire, England. The ward includes New Town, Park Town, Chapel Langley, Capability Green and most of Luton town centre. Junction 10 of the M1 is just outside the ward. Both Luton Airport Parkway and Luton railway station are located within the ward. London Luton Airport is close by. Local area The local area is a mixture of residential and commercial, yet the area itself has traditionally been associated with the working class population. However, a series of developments towards Stockwood Park and Golf Centre, on the edge of Luton, have helped to bring in new residents, lifting the area. There is a local business park, Capability Green, and nearby, Gypsy Lane Retail Park on the A1081 and towards Castle Street heading up towards the town centre, new businesses have been setting up, boosting the area further. At the 2011 census, the Luton built-up area subdivision had a population of 211,228 and its built-up area, including the adjacent towns of Dunstable and Houghton Regis, had a population of 258,018. It is the most populous town in the county, from the County Towns of Hertford, from Bedford and from London. The town is situated on the River Lea, about north-north-west of London. The town's foundation dates to the sixth century as a Saxon outpost on the River Lea, from which Luton derives its name. Luton South (UK Parliament Constituency)
Luton South is a constituency in Bedfordshire represented in the House of Commons of the UK Parliament since 2019 by Rachel Hopkins, a member of the Labour Party. History This seat was created in 1983, primarily from the former seat of Luton East. The constituency and its predecessors the Luton East and Luton constituencies were long considered a bellwether (they had elected an MP from the winning party in each election since the 1951 general election). Margaret Moran, who was the Labour MP from 1997, stood down at the 2010 general election after falsifying claims for her expenses. Bellwether status ended in the 2010 general election, when the constituency elected a Labour MP while the Conservatives were the largest party in the House of Commons. Rachel Hopkins
Rachel Louise Hopkins (born 30 March 1972) is a British politician who has served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Luton South since 2019. A member of the Labour Party, she has been a Shadow Minister for the Cabinet Office since 2021. Hopkins was a Member of Luton Borough Council from 2011 to 2021, on which she served as Executive Member for Public Health. Early life and career Hopkins was born in Luton and Dunstable University Hospital and raised in Biscot. She attended Denbigh High School and then Luton Sixth Form College before going on to study at the University of Leicester. Her first full-time job was at TSB Bank. She later studied part-time for a master's degree from the University of Bedfordshire. Hopkins previously worked at the Electoral Commission and the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority.
