Anthony, Kansas
Anthony is a city in and the county seat of Harper County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population of the city was 2,108. History The Anthony townsite was laid out in 1878. The city was named after the 7th governor of Kansas, George T. Anthony who was in office at the time. Following the reorganization of Harper County in 1878 following the original fraudulent organization in 1873, Anthony was designated the temporary county seat, as Bluff City, designated county seat of the fraudulent county organization, did not exist at the time. In 1879, a county seat election was held, and Anthony won over Harper City even though 2,960 ballots were cast with 800 legal voters in the county. The Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA) is the organization which oversees interscholastic competition in the U.S. state of Kansas at the high school, high-school level. It oversees both athletic and non-athletic competition, and sponsors championships in several sports and activities. History The Kansas State High School Activities Association was formed in 1937 and incorporated in 1956. As early as 1910, Kansas schools organized the statewide Debate League and Athletic Association governed by high school principals. Runnymede, Kansas
Runnymede is an unincorporated community in Harper County, Kansas, United States. It is located northeast of Harper along K-2 state highway at the intersection of NE 140 Rd and NE 60 Ave. History Runnymede was touted by an Irish promoter as a planned community in Kansas to wealthy Irish and Great British families in the United Kingdom as a place in a "dry" state where their sons could come to begin a career as gentlemen farmers. Begun in 1888, the speculative though impressive scheme essentially collapsed within four years. The livery stable burned down in 1890. Other buildings were moved south close to the new constructed rail line. In 1891, the centerpiece of the town, a hotel, was partly disassembled and moved into the recently opened Cherokee Strip in Alva, Oklahoma in 1893. Freeport is an unincorporated community in Harper County, Kansas, United States. As of the 2010 census, the population of the community was 5. It was an incorporated city up until 2017 when it dissolved. History Before officially being established as a city, Freeport was preceded by a settlement called Midlothian, which was located a few miles from Freeport's current location. Midlothian is the Scottish word for Midland. Midlothian had a few amenities including a post office established in 1879, as well as a local school and church. Freeport was founded in 1885.
