Channel 8 News
8world News is a department which produces news, current affairs, and info-ed programmes for two Mediacorp channels aired in Mandarin, Channels 8 and U. Prior to 2010, the news were presented in three timeslots - ''News 8 At One'' (Chinese:1点新闻), which airs daily; ''Singapore Today'' (Chinese:狮城6点半), and ''News 8 at 10''. (Chinese:10点新闻). With the reduction of MediaCorp News Group employees and the increased demand for more variety programme content on Channel U, MediaCorp announced that the news programmes on Channel U would end with effect from 29 March 2010. News 8 at 10 would then air at 11.00pm there, as a new title called ''News Tonight'' (Chinese:晚间新闻). Channel 8 ( zh, 8頻道) is a Singaporean free-to-air television channel, airing in Mandarin Chinese. It was created by Television Singapura on 31 August 1963 with experimental broadcasts, before going official on 23 November that year. The channel's logo is a yellow number 8 on top of a red disc. History Channel 8 began its test transmissions on Saturday, 31 August 1963, Malaysia's national day. Its first day consisted of a Hokkien film, repeats of India's participation in the South East Asian Cultural Festival and Singapore Celebrates. A second test transmission took place between 16 and 20 September of that year and devoted much of its time to the week-long celebrations, to coincide with the historic Proclamation of Malaysia, and the political campaigns leading up to the 1963 General Election. Channel U (Singaporean TV Channel)
Channel U (marketed as U頻道, formerly named 优频道) is a Singaporean free-to-air television channel owned by Mediacorp. It was launched on 6 May 2001 by SPH MediaWorks. On 1 January 2005, the channel was transferred to Mediacorp after a merger between SPH MediaWorks and Mediacorp. Its logo is a turquoise sphere with a white letter U on its surface facing left. The channel's programming consists of Chinese-language series and shows produced locally and imported from China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand as well as Korean-language series provided by KBS, MBC and SBS. Hello Singapore (Chinese: 狮城有约) is a news/current affairs programme produced by Mediacorp Channel 8. History The show replaced the current weekday broadcast of ''Singapore Today'' as well as half of the 7.00pm drama timeslot, airing weekdays from 6.30pm, premiering together with socio-drama , ''Healing Hands'' at 7.30pm. A repeat telecast of "Crosstalks" and the topic of the day will also be available the next weekday, 7.30am to 8.00am. Hello Singapore ended its broadcast at Caldecott Hill on 10 March 2017. On 13 March 2017, it was then moved to Mediacorp Campus at 1 Stars Avenue. The National Day Rally ( ms, Rapat Umum Hari Kebangsaan; ; ta, தேசிய தின பேரணி) is an annual message delivered by the prime minister of Singapore to the entire nation, on the first or second Sunday after the National Day on 9 August. The Ultimatum () is a Singaporean Chinese drama which was telecast on Singapore's free-to-air channel, MediaCorp Channel 8. It made its debut on 27 May 2009 and ended on 7 July 2009. This drama serial consists of 30 episodes and was screened on weekdays at 9:00 pm. Being the mid-year Channel 8 blockbuster of 2009, it was the first Channel 8 drama to be fully filmed in HD. ''Crescendo'' (Chinese: 起飞) is a Singaporean musical drama produced by production company Wawa Pictures and telecast on MediaCorp Channel 8. The drama began production in May 2015 and will make its debut on 23 October 2015. The show aired at 9 pm on weekdays and had a repeat telecast at 8 am the following day. It stars Christopher Lee, Tay Ping Hui, Darren Lim, Jacelyn Tay, Cynthia Koh and Ann Kok in this series. The series is set against the backdrop of the Xinyao Movement, synonymous with the pursuit of dreams of a young generation of Singaporeans in the local music industry, and a part of Singapore culture many still hold dear. Death Of Lee Kuan Yew
On 23 March 2015, Lee Kuan Yew, the founding prime minister of Singapore and co-founder of the People's Action Party, died at the age of 91 at 03:18 Singapore Standard Time ( UTC+08:00), after having been hospitalised at the Singapore General Hospital with severe pneumonia since 5 February that year. A formal announcement was made on national television and radio by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at 08:00 that morning. Many world leaders, governments, international organizations, and individuals issued public condolences. A week-long period of national mourning was declared by the government, from 23 to 29 March that year. All flags, including the National Flag, in Singapore were flown at half-mast during the period. 2023 Singaporean Presidential Election
Presidential elections were held in Singapore on 1 September 2023, the sixth public presidential elections but only the third to be contested by more than one candidate. Incumbent president Halimah Yacob, who had been Uncontested election, elected unopposed in 2017 Singaporean presidential election, 2017, did not seek re-election. Three candidates ran for the Non-partisan democracy, non-partisan position: Tharman Shanmugaratnam, Ng Kok Song, and Tan Kin Lian, who were all Independent politician, independents or had resigned from any political parties that they had previously been members of. They were all issued the Certificate of Eligibility (COE), and a community certificate, to be able to contest in the elections, per the eligibility requirements.
