Chamonate Airport
Chamonate Airport es, Aeródromo Chamonate, is an airport serving Copiapó, the capital of the Atacama Region of Chile. It served as the main airport for the region until February 2005 when Desierto de Atacama Airport opened. The airport is in the valley of the Copiapó River, downstream from the city. There is rising terrain in all quadrants. Copiapó
Copiapó () is a city and commune in northern Chile, located about 65 kilometers east of the coastal town of Caldera. Founded on December 8, 1744, it is the capital of Copiapó Province and Atacama Region. Copiapó lies about 800 km north of Santiago by the Copiapó River, in the valley of the same name. In the early 21st century, the river has dried up in response to climate change and more severe droughts. The town is surrounded by the Atacama Desert and receives 12 mm (½ in) of rain per year. The population of Copiapó was 9,128 in 1903; and 11,617 in 1907. As of 2012, there are 158,438 inhabitants. Copiapó is in a rich silver and copper mining district. A bronze statue commemorates Juan Godoy, discoverer of the Chañarcillo silver mines in the 19th century. The Copiapó-Caldera railway line, built in 1850, was the first one in South America. Chile, officially the Republic of Chile, is a country in the western part of South America. It is the southernmost country in the world, and the closest to Antarctica, occupying a long and narrow strip of land between the Andes to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. Desierto De Atacama Airport
Desierto de Atacama Airport is an airport serving the region around Copiapó, the capital of the Atacama Region of Chile. The airport is in the desert north of the Copiapó River, inland from the Pacific coast. Opened in February 2005, the airport replaced the smaller Chamonate Airport near the city, which was unable to increase its capacity and could not handle larger narrow-body planes such as the Airbus A320 and Boeing 737-800. Copiapó River is a river of Chile located in the Atacama Region. Starting at the confluence of the ''Jorquera'' and ''Pulido'' rivers, the Copiapó flows for only 2.5 km before receiving the waters of the '' Manflas River''.
