Chai Hong (actor)
Chai Hong (often billed as Charlie from the Orient) was a Korea-born actor and comedian who appeared in a string of Hollywood comedies during the silent era. He was often referred to as "the Chinese Charlie Chaplin". Biography Chai Hong was born in 1885 and subsequently raised by his grandmother, according to information he gave "Screenland" columnist Ogden Lawrence. He eventually immigrated to Hawaii and later to Los Angeles. After working as a bellboy at the Hotel Alexandria, he broke into Hollywood after being scouted by L-KO. He appeared in more than 20 films between 1918 and 1922; According to author Thomas Reeder, Hong was working as Lew Cody's valet and houseman mid-1925. Researcher Jesse Brisson feels pretty positive he later went by the name "Chester Hong," moved to New York City, and worked as a cook. ''Darktown Strutters'' is a 1975 blaxploitation musical comedy film from New World Pictures. Despite having mixed reviews at the time it has gained cult status over the years with praise from film director Quentin Tarantino. Tarantino called it "a ridiculous satire". Plot A gang of four female bikers, Syreena, Carmen, Miranda, and Theda, pull into a roadside dinner where they get in a fight with 3 US Marines pieing them with the lemon meringue pies they ordered. They win the fight, and proceed to drive off while humming the Marine corps hymn. Later a group of comically militarized cops pull them over and demand to see their driver's licenses. One fat cop is stuck in the police cruiser, however, and Syreena walks over and demands to see ''his'' driver's license. The Blind Pig is a music venue in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The club was established as a home for blues musicians, although today it books predominantly indie rock acts and local groups. History The Blind Pig opened in 1971. Tom Isaia and Jerry DelGiudice created it as a European-influenced cafe, complete with espresso/cappuccino, a unique and varied food menu, including home made soups, Italian biscotti, crostini, a full wine and beer list, and top-notch Blues entertainment. The partners renovated an old downtown Ann Arbor building and named the combined cafe/club after illegal after-hours gathering places, referred to by the slang term blind pig, another name for a speakeasy.Though a newspaper article refers to the use of the name as a term for a police officer who looks the other way at illegal alcohol sales.
