Central East African Railways is a consortium formed in 1999, led by the Railroad Development Corporation, which won the right to operate the Malawi Railways network. The company was sold in September 2008 to INSITEC, an investment group based in Mozambique. Operations It mainly manages the Sena railway line, which currently links the railway stations of Blantyre/ Limbe, Nkaya, Chipoka, Salima, Lilongwe and Mchinji. Its concession also includes the sections between Marka, Nsanje, Bangula, Luchenza and Blantyre/Limbe stations, which are currently inoperative. In 2010, a multinational mining company Vale (with CEAR and Mozambique Ports and Railways) managed to sew the formation of the joint venture " Integrated Northern Logistical Corridor Society", for the administration of the Nacala railway, having permission to build the railway extension to the coal belt of Benga-Moatize, where the mining company has mineral exploration concessions. Bangula
Bangula is a town of about 5000 population in southern region district of Nsanje in Malawi. There is also a commune of the same name. Its elevation is 100m. It is located on the western bank of the Shire River, near the confluence of the Shire and Ruo River. After extensive flooding in Chiromo (on the eastern bank of the Shire), the municipalities were moved to Bangula (postal and police). The name Bangula is roughly translated to 'place where the lions roar' – although few to no lions exist in the area anymore. Transport Bangula was served by a station on the Sena railway system which heads to Mozambique but this has been closed since 1997 when the Chiromo bridge over the Shire River collapsed.Work on Malawi road-rail bridge to start soon

Malawi Railways is the national rail network in Malawi, run by a government corporation until privatisation in 1999. As of 1 December 1999 the Central East African Railways, a consortium led by Railroad Development Corporation, won the right to operate the network. The rail network totalled 797 kilometres in 2001. Liwonde, or Livonde, is a town located in Machinga District, in the Southern Region of Malawi. Geography Located in Machinga District in the Southern Region of Malawi, Liwonde is located in the Shire River valley. Its main landmark is the road that connects Zomba to Lilongwe, making the town an important crossroads between Balaka, Machinga, Mangochi and Zomba. Another important Liwonde landmark is the Liwonde National Park nature conservation area. The town thus serves as a dormitory, support center and access base for tourists and researchers traveling to Liwonde National Park. Nacala-a-Velha
Nacala-a-Velha, is a town on the northern coast of Mozambique. It is located on the western shore of inner Fernao Veloso Bay, opposite the city of Nacala. Nacala-a-Velha is the site of a large marine coal terminal which opened in January 2016. The terminal is operated by the Port of Nacala, but physically separate from the commercial port across the bay. The Nacala railway links the coal terminal to the coalfields at Moatize in Tete Province. Coal is loaded from trains onto ships at Nacala-a-Velha for export to other countries. Moatize is the principal town and administrative center of Moatize District in western Mozambique, Mozambique's Tete Province. It is located on the eastern side of the Zambezi River at the confluence of the Moatize and Revúboé River, Revuboe Rivers. After Tete, it is the second largest urban area, by population, in western Mozambique. Portos e Caminhos de Ferro de Moçambique (abbreviated CFM; in English Mozambique Ports and Railways) is a state-owned company that oversees the railway system of Mozambique and its connected ports. The rail system is composed of a total of 2,983 km rail of the gauge that is compatible with neighboring rail systems. In addition there is a 140 km line of gauge, the Gaza Railway. The system developed over more than a century from three different ports at the Indian Ocean that serve as terminals for separate lines to the hinterland. The railroads were major targets during the Mozambican Civil War, were sabotaged by RENAMO, and are being rehabilitated. Management has been largely outsourced. At this time there is no directly interconnecting rail service between the three lines. Each line has its own development corridor.
