Centerville High School, is a public high school located in Centerville, Iowa. It is part of the Centerville Community School District and is the home of the Big Reds and Redettes. The first graduate was Miss Jennie Drake, the daughter of former Iowa Governor, Francis Marion Drake. The Centerville Community School District is a public school district headquartered in Centerville, Iowa. It serves areas in Appanoose County, including Centerville, Cincinnati, Exline, Mystic, Numa, Rathbun and the surrounding rural areas. The school's athletic teams are the Reds and Redettes, their colors are Scarlet and Black, and they are in the South Central Conference. Tom Rubel was hired as the interim superintendent in 2016. Centerville is a city in and the county seat of Appanoose County, Iowa, Appanoose County, Iowa, United States. The population was 5,412 in the 2020 United States Census, 2020 census, a decline from 5,924 in 2000 United States Census, 2000. After the turn of the 20th century Centerville's coal mining industry attracted European immigrants from Sweden, Italy, Croatia, and Albania. Francis Marion Drake
Francis Marion Drake (December 30, 1830 – November 20, 1903) was an American merchant, lawyer, banker and politician. He fought in the American Civil War and later became the 16th Governor of Iowa. He is the namesake of Drake University. Biography Drake was born in Rushville, Illinois, the son of John Adams Drake and Harriet Jane O'Neal. He later moved to Centerville, Iowa. He received a good business education, and became a merchant. He married Mary Jane Lord on December 24, 1855. They had seven children. During the California Gold Rush, he led two expeditions across the plains from Iowa to California. The first one left in 1852. During that trip with ox teams, he and just 7 other teamsters encountered a band of 300 Pawnee on the plains of Nebraska and he succeeded in blunting their attack with little loss-reportedly after personally slaying the Pawnee leader with a knife, demoralizing the remaining Indians, who broke contact. Made up of mid-sized 2A and 3A schools, the conference currently has seven members, five of which are based in their respective county seats.
