Centerpoint Mall (Toronto)
Centerpoint Mall (formerly Towne and Countrye Square) is a shopping mall located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on the southwest corner of Steeles Avenue and Yonge Street at the boundary of Toronto. History Centerpoint Mall was known as Towne and Countrye Square at its grand opening in the 1960s as an enclosed mall, until the name change to its present name in 1990. In 1966, the mall began operation with anchors Sayvette, Miracle Mart, and Super City Discount Foods. The Super City (later Loblaws) store was torn down and rebuilt as a two-storey Zellers. The Bay was added adjacent to Yonge Street in April 1974. The Sayvette chain went defunct in 1975 and was converted to Woolco. Woolco
Woolco was an American-based discount retail chain. It was founded in 1962 in Columbus, Ohio, by the F. W. Woolworth Company. It was a full-line discount department store unlike the five-and-dime Woolworth stores which operated at the time. At its peak, Woolco had hundreds of stores in the US, as well as in Canada and the United Kingdom. While the American stores were closed in 1983, the chain remained active in Canada until it was sold in 1994 to rival Walmart, which was looking to enter the Canadian market. All of the former UK Woolco stores were sold by Kingfisher, who had bought the UK Woolworth business, to Gateway who subsequently sold them to Asda. North York
North York is one of the six administrative districts of Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Target Canada Co. was the Canadian subsidiary of the Target Corporation, the eighth-largest retailer in the United States. Zellers
Zellers was a Canadian discount department retail chain and is currently a brand name owned by the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC). Founded in 1931 in London, Ontario, in later decades it was based in Brampton, Ontario. Zellers was acquired by HBC in 1978 before closing in 2013. A series of acquisitions and expansions allowed Zellers to reach its peak in the 1990s, with 350 stores across the country in 1999. However, fierce competition by Walmart Canada and an inability to adjust to the increasingly volatile retailing industry resulted in Zellers losing significant ground in the 2000s. Miracle Mart
Miracle Mart was a chain of discount department stores with locations in Ontario and Quebec, Canada based in Saint-Laurent, Quebec. The chain was renamed to simply M in the mid-1980s. History The company was founded in early 1961 as Miracle Mart Limited by Montreal-based grocery chain Steinberg's. Later in the year, Steinberg's associated itself with Vancouver-based chain Woodward's. They opened their first store on October 11, 1961, in Pont-Viau under the trade name of Woodward Steinberg. A second store with the same trademark opened in November 1961 at the Place Greenfield Park shopping centre. Sayvette
Sayvette was a discount department store in Canada from 1961 to 1977. The chain was announced in February 1961, and launched its first store at Thorncliffe Market Place in a Toronto suburb (now East York Town Centre) that September. Over 70,000 customers passed through the first Sayvette on September 7, 1961. Sayvette City, at the southwest corner of Yonge Street and Steeles Avenue (now Centerpoint Mall), opened in November, claiming to have the largest retail space in Metropolitan Toronto. Sayvette carried St. Michael-branded goods from British department store Marks and Spencer. The chain planned to have at least 20 stores across Canada.
