Cemmes Road Railway Station
Cemmes Road was a railway station on the Newtown and Machynlleth Railway (N&MR) in Mid-Wales, serving the village of Cemmaes Road. The N&MR passed through the Cambrian Mountains in the deep Talerddig cutting, which formed the summit of the line. From there it descended towards the coast, reaching the Dyfi valley at the village of Cemmaes Road, where there was a junction with the Mawddwy Railway. The N&MR continued west to . The Cemmaes railway station, next station, north of Cemmes Road on the Mawddwy Railway, served the village of Cemmaes. To avoid confusion with that station, the N&MR's English people, English backers named the junction station using an Anglicised version of the village's Welsh language name. Cemmes Road station closed as a result of the Beeching Axe in 1965, although the station building still exists as a private house. Cemmaes Road
Cemmaes Road ( cy, Glantwymyn; ) is a village in Powys, Wales. It is in the community (civil parish) of Glantwymyn. The village was named in English after the now-closed station on the Newtown and Machynlleth Railway, now part of the Cambrian Line. Cemmes Road was also the junction with the Mawddwy Railway. The Welsh name for the village, and for the community, is ''Glantwymyn'' ( en, The Twymyn Riverside), as it lies on the River Twymyn. According to the United Kingdom Census 2001, the population of the community is 1,072, increasing to 1,185 at the 2011 Census. The village of Cemmaes is miles to the northeast. Cemmaes Road lies at the junction of the major A470 and A489 roads. The historic Mathafarn Hall is less than mile north-west of Cemmaes Road. Cemmaes Railway Station
Cemmaes railway station was an intermediate railway station on the Mawddwy Railway which ran from Cemmaes Road to Dinas Mawddy in the Welsh county of Merionethshire. The station was opened by the Mawddwy Railway in 1867 and closed to all goods traffic in 1908. The railway re-opened in 1911 with all services run by the Cambrian Railways. It was amalgamated into the Great Western Railway in 1923 as part of the grouping of British railways, and remained open to passenger traffic until 1931. The Beeching cuts (also Beeching Axe) was a plan to increase the efficiency of the nationalised railway system in Great Britain.
