Celina ( ) is a city in and the county seat of Mercer County, Ohio, United States about 58 miles northwest of Dayton. The population was 10,400 at the 2010 census. Celina is situated on the northwestern shores of Grand Lake St. Marys. History James Watson Riley established Celina in 1834. The settlement was named after Salina, New York. The town was hit by a deadly EF3 tornado on May 27, 2019. Numerous homes, building, trees, and power lines and poles were damaged or destroyed. One person was killed and eight others were injured. Western Buckeye League
Centered in Lima, Ohio, the Western Buckeye League is an OHSAA athletic league located in northwest Ohio and includes schools in Allen, Auglaize, Defiance, Hardin, Mercer, Putnam, and Van Wert counties. The league's school district boundaries also include portions of Logan, Paulding, Shelby, and Wyandot counties. The WBL originally formed in 1936 and is one of the oldest high school conferences in the state. The Western Buckeye League currently awards championships in 13 Varsity sports: baseball, basketball, bowling, cross country, football, golf, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track, volleyball, and wrestling. Jim Otis
James Lloyd Otis (born April 29, 1948) is an American former professional football player who was a running back in the National Football League (NFL) for nine seasons during the 1970s. Otis played college football for Ohio State University, and was recognized as an All-American. He played professionally for the New Orleans Saints, Kansas City Chiefs and St. Louis Cardinals of the NFL. Early years Otis was born in Celina, Ohio. He attended Celina High School, and played for the Celina Bulldogs high school football team. College career Otis attended the Ohio State University, where he was a fullback for the Ohio State Buckeyes football team from 1967 to 1969.
