Celebration At Big Sur
''Celebration at Big Sur'' (also known simply as ''Celebration'') is a film of the 1969 Big Sur Folk Festival in Big Sur, California, featuring Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell and others. Released in 1971, the film was directed by Baird Bryant and Johanna Demetrakas. A young Gary Weis was among the cinematographers; other members of the camera and sound crew also went on to become famous in their fields, including Peter Smokler, Peter Pilafian, and Joan Churchill. The film was released in 2011 as a Region 1 DVD. The festival, one in an annual series of concerts held on the grounds of the Esalen Institute in Big Sur from 1964 to 1971, was held on the weekend of September 13–14, 1969, only one month after the famous and considerably larger Woodstock Music & Art Fair, which is referred to repeatedly. Baird Bryant
Wenzell Baird Bryant (December 12, 1927 – November 13, 2008) was an American filmmaker. He was well known in documentary circles for his hand-held ability to almost instantaneously capture live action as it was happening. Hired as the cameraman on ''Gimme Shelter (1970 film), Gimme Shelter'', the Albert Maysles film of The Rolling Stones American Tour 1969, The Rolling Stones 1969 American Tour, Baird caught on camera the Death of Meredith Hunter, fatal stabbing of concertgoer Meredith Hunter by Hells Angels, Hells Angel Alan Passaro at the Altamont Free Concert in December 1969. Woodstock (song)
"Woodstock" is a popular song written by Joni Mitchell. Three versions of the song were released in the same year, 1970. Mitchell's own version was first performed live in 1969 and appeared in April 1970 on her album '' Ladies of the Canyon'' and as the B-side to her single " Big Yellow Taxi". This publication was preceded by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's cover version, which appeared on their March 1970 album ''Déjà Vu'' and became a staple of classic rock radio and the best-known version in the United States. A third version, by the British band Matthews Southern Comfort became the best known version in the United Kingdom, and was the highest charting version of the song, reaching the top of the UK singles chart in 1970. A heckler is a person who harasses and tries to disconcert others with questions, challenges, or gibes. Hecklers are often known to shout encouraging comments at a performance or event, or to interrupt set-piece speeches, with the intent of disturbing performers and/or participants. Down By The River (Neil Young Song)
"Down by the River" is a song composed by Neil Young. It was first released on his 1969 album with Crazy Horse, ''Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere''. Young explained the context of the story in the liner notes of his 1977 anthology album ''Decade'', stating that he wrote "Down by the River," "Cinnamon Girl" and " Cowgirl in the Sand" while delirious in bed in Topanga Canyon with a fever. Lyrics and music The lyrics tell the story of someone who killed his lover by shooting her after feeling unable to continue from the emotional highs of their relationship. Gregory Allen Reeves (born ) is an American bass guitarist. He is best known for playing bass on Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young's album ''Déjà Vu'' (1970). Early life Reeves grew up in Warren, Ohio, and graduated from Warren Western Reserve High School in 1968. In an interview, bandmate Dallas Taylor spoke of a rumor that Reeves was as young as 15 years old when he joined CSNY. Dallas Taylor (drummer)
Dallas Woodrow Taylor Jr. (April 7, 1948 – January 18, 2015) was an American session drummer who played drums on several rock albums throughout the 1960s and 1970s. Life and career Taylor was born in Denver but grew up in San Antonio, Texas. He achieved some success with psychedelic rock band Clear Light in the late 1960s, but is best remembered as the drummer on Crosby, Stills and Nash's debut album, and their follow-up with Neil Young, ''Déjà Vu'' (1970), and was given a front-sleeve credit along with Motown bassist Greg Reeves. Sweet Sir Galahad
"Sweet Sir Galahad" is a song written by Joan Baez that she famously performed at the Woodstock Festival in August 1969, after having debuted it during an appearance in a Season Three episode of ''The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour'', which aired on March 30, 1969. A recording of the song, first released as a single in late 1969, would lead off Baez's 1970 album '' One Day at a Time''. History The song tells the story of Baez's younger sister Mimi Fariña and her marriage (her second) to music producer Milan Melvin.
