Cecily Morrow
Cecily Alexandra Morrow is a United States Figure Skating (USFS) gold medalist in figures and skating teacher. Cecily was born in 1958, and started skating at age three in Baltimore, Maryland with Bob and Joan Ogilvie. She trained with World and Olympic coaches Gustave Lussi in freeskating and figures, Carlo Fassi in figures, and Natalia Dubova in ice dance, to name a few. In addition, she has extensive, off-ice dance training in ballet, jazz, modern, step-dance, and physical conditioning. Beginning her professional coaching career in 1974, she has taught all levels of skating from beginner to World and Olympic Champions. For many years, Cecily taught skating at the Skating Club of New York (NYC) and at the Olympic Center in Lake Placid, New York, including workshops with Gustave Lussi. United States Figure Skating
U.S. Figure Skating is the national governing body for the sport of figure skating in the United States. It is recognized as such by the United States Olympic & Paralympic Committee "USOPC" under the Ted Stevens Olympic and Amateur Sports Act and is the United States member of the International Skating Union ("ISU"). Although the name of the organization is “the United States Figure Skating Association” it is now known as and conducts business under the name “U.S. Figure Skating.” Founded in 1921, U.S. Figure Skating regulates and governs the sport and defines and maintains the standard of skating proficiency. Gustave Lussi
Gustave François Lussi (June 2, 1898 – June 23, 1993) was a figure skating coach. His students include many champions, such as Dick Button, Tenley Albright, Maria Jelinek / Otto Jelinek, Donald Jackson, Alena Vrzáňová, Ronald Robertson, Ronald Ludington, Barbara Ann Scott, David Jenkins, Hayes Jenkins, Emmerich Danzer, Dorothy Hamill, John Misha Petkevich, Maureen Masley, and John Curry. Personal life Lussi was born in Stans, Switzerland. He himself was not a competitive skater but a ski jumper. He lost his nerve for that sport after a fall, and became interested in skating instead. His previous experience with the sport was only recreational skating on Lake Lucerne as a boy. In 1919, Lussi emigrated to the United States, landing in New York City. Freeskating
The free skating segment of figure skating, also called the free skate and the long program, is the second of two segments of competitions, skated after the short program. Its duration, across all disciplines, is four minutes for senior skaters and teams, and three and one-half minutes for junior skaters and teams. Carlo Fassi
Carlo Fassi (20 December 1929 – 20 March 1997) was an Italian figure skater and international coach whose students included several World and Olympic champions. As a single skater, he was the 1953 World bronze medalist, a two-time European champion (1953, 1954), and a ten-time Italian national champion (1945–54). Personal life Fassi was born in Milan, the son of a builder. He spoke five languages. He married Christa Fassi (von Kuczkowski) in 1960. They had three children: Ricardo, Monika, and Lorenzo. Competitive career Fassi competed in two disciplines at the 1948 Winter Olympics in St. Moritz, Switzerland, placing 15th in men's singles and 13th in pair skating with partner Grazia Barcellona. Natalia Ilinichna Dubova (russian: Наталья Ильинична Дубова; born 31 March 1948) is a Russian ice dancing coach and former competitive ice dancer. Career Competing as Natalia Bakh with partner Vladimir Pavlikhin, she won the bronze medal at the 1965 Soviet Championships. In 1969, she began coaching at the Sokolniki Arena in Moscow. In September 1992, she moved to Lake Placid, New York. Ice Dance
Ice dance (sometimes referred to as ice dancing) is a discipline of figure skating that historically draws from ballroom dancing. It joined the World Figure Skating Championships in 1952, and became a Winter Olympic Games medal sport in 1976. According to the International Skating Union (ISU), the governing body of figure skating, an ice dance team consists of one woman and one man. Lake Placid is a village in the Adirondack Mountains in Essex County, New York, United States. As of the 2020 census, the population was 2,303. The village of Lake Placid is near the center of the town of North Elba, southwest of Plattsburgh. Dick Button
Richard Totten Button (born July 18, 1929) is an American former figure skater and skating analyst. He is a two-time Olympic champion (1948, 1952) and five-time consecutive World champion (1948–1952). He is also the only non-European man to have become European champion. Button is credited as having been the first skater to successfully land the double Axel jump in competition in 1948, as well as the first triple jump of any kind – a triple loop – in 1952. The Ice Theatre of New York is a professional ensemble company dancing on ice, performing works by choreographers drawn from competitive figure skating and modern and contemporary dance.
