Cebuano literature includes both the oral and written literary forms Cebuano of colonial, pre-colonial and post-colonial Philippines. While the majority of Cebuano writers are from the Visayas and Mindanao region, the best-known literary outlets for them, including the Bisaya Magasin, are based in Makati in Metro Manila. There is also a lively community of Cebuano-language writers based outside the country. History Cebuano literature, as much as most literature of the Philippines, started with fables and legends of the early people in the Philippines and colonial period, right down to the Mexican (Viceroyalty of New Spain) and Spanish influences. Although existence of a pre-Hispanic writing system in Luzon is attested, there is proof that ''baybayin'' was widespread in the Visayas. Most of the literature produced during that period was oral. Cebuano Culture
The Cebuano people ( ceb, Mga Sugbuanon) are the largest subgroup of the larger ethnolingustic group Visayans, who constitute the largest Filipino ethnolinguistic group in the country. Their primary language is the Cebuano language, an Austronesian language. They originated in the province of Cebu in the region of Central Visayas, but then later spread out to other places in the Philippines, such as Siquijor, Bohol, Negros Oriental, southwestern Leyte, western Samar, Masbate, and large parts of Mindanao. It may also refer to the ethnic group who speak the same language as their native tongue in different parts of the archipelago. The term ''Cebuano'' also refers to the demonym of permanent residents in Cebu island regardless of ethnicity. Filemon Yap Sotto (November 22, 1872 – October 10, 1966) was a Filipino Visayan lawyer, legislator, and politician from Cebu, Philippines. He was a newspaper publisher and founded the periodicals ''El Imperial'', ''Ang Kaluwasan'', ''La Opinion,'' and ''La Revolucion''. He served as member of Cebu municipal board, congressman of Cebu's 3rd district for the Philippine Assembly (1907–1916), senator of the Philippine Legislature (1916–1922), delegate to the 1934 Constitutional Convention, and delegate to the Institute of National Language (1937). Dionisio Jakosalem
Dionisio Abella Jakosalem (May 8, 1878 – July 1, 1931) was the governor of Cebu, Philippines (1906–1912) and the first Filipino cabinet member appointed under the American regime. Early life and education Jakosalem was the son of Alfonso Jakosalem and Apolonia Abella and born in Dumanjug, Cebu on May 8, 1878. He studied in Dumanjug, Colegio-Seminario de San Carlos where he met Sergio Osmeña Sr., and University of Santo Tomas where he acquired his bachelor's and law degrees. On March 27, 1907, he passed the bar exams. He married Generosa Teves. Vicente Ranudo
Vicente Ranudo (April 29, 1882 – March 6, 1930) was a Filipino Visayan writer, poet laureate, and Cebu provincial civil servant. He wrote for various pre-war periodicals, including the first Cebuano newspaper ''Ang Suga'', and was considered the father of Cebuano poetry. Early life Ranudo was born in San Roque district in Cebu, Philippines on April 29, 1882. He studied at Colegio-Seminario de San Carlos (now University of San Carlos). In his time, San Carlos started offering courses in Spanish grammar, Latin prose, and poetry. In 1906, he married Francisca Rodis and the couple bore two children.
