SS Cayuga
SS ''Cayuga'' was a steel-hulled American package freighter in service between 1889 and 1895. She was built in 1889 in Cleveland, Ohio, by the Globe Iron Works Company for the Lehigh Valley Transit Company of Buffalo, New York. One of five identical sister ships, ''Cayuga'' entered service in 1889, carrying package freight between Buffalo and Chicago, Illinois, also making stops in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Gladstone, Michigan. Prior to her sinking, ''Cayuga'' was involved in two accidents. In the first in 1890, when she went aground in a gale just outside of Buffalo harbour; six tugboats managed to pull her free that same day. The second accident occurred in 1891, when ''Cayuga'' was involved in a collision with the package freighter ''Delaware'' near Cheboygan, Michigan. Cayuga ( ) is an unincorporated community and county seat of Haldimand County, Ontario, Canada located at the intersection of Highway 3 and Munsee Street and along the Grand River. Cayuga is about a 20-minute drive from Lake Erie and 30 minutes south of Hamilton and 115 minutes south of Toronto and consequently it has some cottages and recreational properties in the area. In the past, there was some light industry. It has the local district detachment for the Ontario Provincial Police. Cayuga Lake (,,) is the longest of central New York's glacial Finger Lakes, and is the second largest in surface area (marginally smaller than Seneca Lake) and second largest in volume. It is just under long. Its average width is , and it is at its widest point, near Aurora. It is approximately at its deepest point, and has over of shoreline. The Cayuga ( Cayuga: Gayogo̱hó꞉nǫʼ, "People of the Great Swamp") are one of the five original constituents of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois), a confederacy of Native Americans in New York. The Cayuga homeland lies in the Finger Lakes region along Cayuga Lake, between their league neighbors, the Onondaga to the east and the Seneca to the west. Cayuga County is a county in the U.S. state of New York. As of the 2020 census, the population was 76,248. Its county seat and largest city is Auburn. The county was named for the Cayuga people, one of the Indian tribes in the Iroquois Confederation. Cayuga County comprises the Auburn, NY Micropolitan Statistical Area, which is also included in the Syracuse-Auburn, NY Combined Statistical Area. Cayuga Language
Cayuga ( cay, Gayogo̱hó꞉nǫʼ, link=no) is a Northern Iroquoian language of the Iroquois Proper (also known as "Five Nations Iroquois") subfamily, and is spoken on Six Nations of the Grand River First Nation, Ontario, by around 240 Cayuga people, and on the Cattaraugus Reservation, New York, by fewer than 10. The Cayuga language is related to other Northern Iroquoian languages, such as Seneca. It is considered critically endangered, with only 55 people of the Indigenous population reporting Cayuga as their mother tongue in the 2016 Canadian census. However, Cayuga members are making efforts to revitalize the language. (See also Indigenous Languages in Canada.) Cayuga Duck
The Cayuga is an American breed of domestic duck. It was introduced to the Finger Lakes region of New York State in about 1840, and is named for the Cayuga people of that area. Until the last years of the nineteenth century it was the principal duck reared for meat in the United States. In the twenty-first century it is kept mainly for ornament. A much-repeated theory that it descends not from the mallard like almost all domestic ducks, but from ''Anas rubripes'', the American black duck, remains unsubstantiated and unverified by any scientific evidence. The Cayuga Lake AVA is an American Viticultural Area around Cayuga Lake in Upstate New York. The boundaries of the AVA include portions of Cayuga, Seneca, and Tompkins counties. Cayuga, Texas
Cayuga is an unincorporated community in northwestern Anderson County, Texas, United States. According to the Handbook of Texas, the community had a population of 200 in 2000. It is located within the Palestine, Texas micropolitan area. History Cayuga was so named in 1894 by the first postmaster, William Alonzo Davenport, after his native Cayuga, New York. The community began to grow in the 1880s, gathering people and resources from the earlier communities: Gilmore's Community, Wild Cat Bluff and Bethel, all settled in the 1840s. In 1854, the Judson Baptist Church began at an arbor near Charles Gilmore's home. There they built the first Judson church building and cemetery (now called Old Judson Cemetery or just "lost cemetery"). Cayuga, Indiana
Cayuga is a town in Eugene Township, Vermillion County, in the U.S. state of Indiana. The population was 1,162 at the 2010 census. History When the town was laid out on September 20, 1827, it was called Eugene Station, though it was also called Osonimon after an Indian chief of that name. It was later renamed after the village of Cayuga and Cayuga Lake in the state of New York; an early settler named John Groenendyke had originally come from Cayuga County, New York, and moved to Vigo County in 1818, then in 1819 moved to the area that later became Vermillion County. The name is based on the Iroquois term ''Gwa-u-geh'', meaning "the place of taking out" (in terms of a portage). Local legend attributes the name to the sound made by the horn of a Ford Model T. The town was incorporated around 1891. The Cayuga post office has been in operation since 1886.
