Catholic Church In Vanuatu
The Catholic Church in Vanuatu is part of the worldwide Catholic Church, under the spiritual leadership of the Pope in Rome. Catholics constitute 13% of the population of Vanuatu. The church is organized into one diocese based in the capital of Port Vila. The diocese is a member of the Pacific Bishops Conference. History The first ever mass in Oceania was performed on May 14, 1606, when Spanish explorer Pedro de Quiros landed on Espiritu Santo with four priests and eight brothers, some of which were Franciscans and St John of God, and celebrated Pentecost. In 1875 mostly Catholic Tannese settlers wrote to the French government asking that the islands be claimed by France. A permanent mission of the Marist Fathers was established with considerable difficulty in 1887. The mission in Port Vila developed rapidly in the next twenty years. Port Vila (french: Port-Vila), or simply Vila (; french: Vila; bi, Vila ), is the capital and largest city of Vanuatu. It is located on the island of Efate. The Roman Catholic Diocese of Port-Vila (Latin: ''Dioecesis Portus Vilensis''; French language, French: ''Diocèse de Port-Vila'') in Vanuatu is a suffragan diocese of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Nouméa. André Michel Rittie is a former Ambassador Extraordinaire and Plenipotentiary of Vanuatu. Ritte was formerly accredited as Ambassador to Morocco. He served as the official representative of Vanuatu with residence in Rabat. As a small nation with a resident population of 186,678 in 1999, Vanuatu maintains a full embassy only in China and Morocco as well as a Permanent Mission to the United Nations and a Consulate in Nouméa, the capital city of the French territory of New Caledonia. Michel Visi
Michel Visi (* 24 October 1954 in Ningfire, Ambae, Vanuatu – † 19 May 2007 in Port Vila, Vanuatu) was the bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Port-Vila. He also served as the head of Vanuatu's Vanuatu Christian Council, an important interdenominational organization. Visi was originally from the island of Ambae in the northern part of Vanuatu. He was ordained as a Catholic priest on 15 December 1982 at the age of 2 He was appointed to be the Roman Catholic Diocese of Port-Vila, Bishop of Vanuatu on 12 April 1997 by Pope John Paul II to succeed bishop Francis Lambert.
