Cathedral (band)
Cathedral were a doom metal band from Coventry, England. The group gained attention upon release of its debut album, ''Forest of Equilibrium'' (1991), which is considered a classic of the genre. However, the band's sound evolved quickly and began to adopt characteristics of 1970s metal, hard rock and progressive rock. After releasing ten full-length albums and touring extensively for over two decades, Cathedral broke up after the release of ''The Last Spire'' in 2013. History Early history (1989–1991) In 1989, Lee Dorrian left Napalm Death because he was reportedly tiring of the punk scene and did not like the death metal direction which Napalm Death was taking. Cathedral was formed after Lee Dorrian and Mark Griffiths (a Carcass roadie) met and discussed their love for bands like Black Sabbath, Candlemass, Pentagram, Trouble, and Witchfinder General. Wacken Open Air
Wacken Open Air (, abbreviated as W:O:A) is a rock music, rock music festival, held annually since 1990 on the first weekend of August in the village of Wacken, Schleswig-Holstein, Wacken in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany. Almost all styles and subgenres of hard rock and heavy metal music, metal are represented and hosted. It is now one of the largest heavy metal festivals in the world and one of the largest open-air festivals in Germany. Between 2011–2018, the number of attendees was around 85,000, 75,000 of whom were paying visitors. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there were no 2020 and 2021 editions of Wacken Open Air. Acid Reign
Acid Reign are an English thrash metal band, originally active from 1985 to 1991. The band rebooted in 2015 with just H remaining from the original line up. Along with Onslaught, Sabbat and Xentrix, Acid Reign are considered to be one of the "big four" of British thrash metal. To date, they have released three studio albums: ''The Fear'' (1989), ''Obnoxious'' (1990) and ''The Age of Entitlement'' (2019). History Initial career (1985–1991) Acid Reign were formed by drummer and keyboardist Mark Ramsey Wharton , bassist Ian Gangwer (originally Peter Warriner), singer Howard "H" Smith , and future Cathedral member, guitarist Gary "Gaz" Jennings. In 1987, the band released the ''Moshkinstein'' demo. Doom Metal
Doom metal is an extreme subgenre of heavy metal music that typically uses slower tempos, low-tuned guitars and a much "thicker" or "heavier" sound than other heavy metal genres.K. Mark Wharton
Mark Ramsey Wharton is a British musician who has worked as the drummer of Acid Reign, Cathedral, Cronos, Asomvel and Workshed. Biography Wharton formed Acid Reign in 1985, along with Kevin "Kev" Papworth, Ian Gangwer, Howard "H" Smith and Gaz Jennings, whom he had met at Granby High School in Harrogate Acid Reign eventually broke up in 1991 after the release of their 1990 album "Obnoxious", leading to Wharton joining his ex-Acid Reign bandmates Gaz Jennings and Adam Lehan in Cathedral in 1992. Wharton then proceeded to form the band Asomvel with Jay-Jay Winter (whom he had played with in an early band, called "Lochenbar") and Lenny Robinson in 1993. At this time, Wharton would also join Venom vocalist Conrad Lant's eponymous band Cronos, however, by 1996 Wharton was no longer present in any of these projects.
