Catharina Brugmans
''Portrait of Catharina Brugman'' is an oil-on-canvas painting by the Dutch Golden Age painter Frans Hals, painted in 1634 and now in a private collection. It is considered a pendant to the portrait of Catharina's husband Tieleman Roosterman. Life Catharina Brugman was baptized in Amsterdam on 15 October 1609 as the daughter of the cloth merchant Jan Pietersz Brugman and Maria Adriaens. She was engaged to Tieleman on 27 November 1631, the same year that a property investment in the Beemster was made over from Jan's name to his widow Maria. This same property was later made over to Tieleman in 1649. Painting The portrait was inscribed with the year 1634 and the bride's age being 22, but since she was 22 when she married in 1631 it is probably a bit earlier. Similar to Hals' other wedding portraits of standing women, she is holding the back of a chair with her right hand. Frederik Muller
Frederik Muller or Frits Muller (22 July 1817 – 4 January 1881) was a Dutch bibliographer, book seller, and print collector. He married Gerarda Jacoba Yntema. Their son ''Samuel Muller Fz.'' became known as municipal and state archivist in Utrecht. Another son, Jacob Wijbrand Muller, was to become professor of Dutch language and literature at the University of Utrecht, and his son, ''Frederik Muller Jzn'', would be professor of Latin at the University of Amsterdam and that of Leiden. National Gallery
The National Gallery is an art museum in Trafalgar Square in the City of Westminster, in Central London, England. Seymour Slive
Seymour Slive (September 15, 1920 – June 14, 2014) was an American art historian, who served as director of the Harvard Art Museums from 1975 to 1984. Slive was a scholar of Dutch art, specifically of the artists Rembrandt, Frans Hals, and Jacob van Ruisdael. Early life and education A Chicago native and the son of Russian-Jewish immigrants Daniel and Sophia Rapoport, Slive received his bachelor's degree in 1943 and DPhil in 1952, both from the University of Chicago. He served in the United States Navy Reserve during World War II, starting in his junior year of college, and was on active duty in the Pacific Theater from 1942 to 1946. Career Slive was appointed to his first teaching position at Oberlin College in 1950, but soon moved on to Pomona College, where he became an assistant professor of art and chair of department from 1952 to 1954. Franz Kleinberger
Franz (Ferenc, François) Kleinberger (8 June 1858 in Budapest - 10 June 1937 in Paris) was a European art dealer. He set up a gallery called F. Kleinberger Galleries at 9 Rue de l’Échelle in Paris, either in January, 1883, or on February 15, 1883, principally involved in selling to US buyers. The year 1848 appears too, but must be wrong, since he was born in 1858. Here is the source for the obviously wrong year of opening his gallery in Paris. By 1913, according another source after the First World War, he had set up a gallery on lower (first at No. 709, then at No. 725) Fifth Avenue in New York, near the Duveen Gallery. Harry S. Cornelis Hofstede de Groot (9 November 1863 – 14 April 1930), was a Dutch art collector, art historian and museum curator. Life He was born in Dwingeloo and spent some time in Switzerland in his youth due to weak lungs, where he learned German. Wilhelm Von Bode
Wilhelm von Bode (10 December 1845 – 1 March 1929) was a German art historian and museum curator. Born Arnold Wilhelm Bode in Calvörde, he was ennobled in 1913. He was the creator and first curator of the Kaiser Friedrich Museum, now called the Bode Museum in his honor, in 1904. Career Bode studied law at the Universities of Göttingen and Berlin, but took an interest in art during his university years. While practicing law in Braunschweig he systematically rearranged the ducal art collections, and visited a number of museums and private collections in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Italy.
