Castilleja School
Castilleja School is an independent school for girls in grades six through twelve, located in Palo Alto, California. Castilleja is the only non-sectarian all-girls middle and high school in the San Francisco Bay Area. The faculty consists of approximately 70 full-time and part-time women and men. Castilleja is a member of the California Association of Independent Schools and the National Coalition of Girls' Schools. History Castilleja was founded in 1907 by Mary Ishbel Lockey. Originally from Montana, Lockey graduated from Stanford University in 1902, where she majored in English. She was a charter member of Alpha Phi and was the first Stanford Alpha Phi elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She was encouraged by Stanford's first president, David Starr Jordan, to start a school that would offer girls a comprehensive, college preparatory education. Beatrice Judd Ryan (née Beatrice Bromfield; c.1880–December 1, 1966) was an Australian-born American gallerist, art dealer, curator, arts philanthropist, and poet. Helen Katharine Forbes (February 3, 1891 – May 27, 1945) was a Californian artist and arts educator specializing in etching, murals and painting. Nancy Jane Ditz (born June 25, 1954 in San Jose, California) is a former American long-distance runner who is a United States national champion in the marathon. Amy Yuen Yee Chow (Chinese: 周 婉 儀; pinyin: Zhōu Wǎnyí; born May 15, 1978) is an American former artistic gymnast who competed at the 1996 and 2000 Summer Olympics. She is best known for being a member of the Magnificent Seven, which won the United States' first team gold medal in Olympic gymnastics. Tori Anthony (born April 19, 1989) is an American pole vaulter from Woodside, California and the holder of the national indoor and outdoor records for high school women at 14' 2-1/2" (4.33 m) and 14' 1" (4.29 m) respectively. She was originally a gymnast, but burned out on the sport and switched to track and water polo. Competing in her first track events as a sophomore, she placed fourth in the pole vault at the 2005 CIF California State Meet within four months of taking up the sport.
