Cassiano Ricardo
Cassiano Ricardo (July 26, 1895 – January 14, 1974) was a Brazilian journalist, literary critic, and poet. An exponent of the nationalistic tendencies of Brazilian modernism, he was associated with the ''Green-Yellow'' and ''Anta'' groups of the movement before launching the ''Flag'' group, a social-democratic reaction to these groups. His work evolved into concrete poetry at the end of his career. Early life Cassiano Ricardo was born in São José dos Campos, São Paulo, in 1895. Career Ricardo, formerly a Symbolist poet, became a late adherent to Brazilian modernism and co-founded the mystical nationalist journal ''Novíssima''. In the following year, 1926, he launched the ''Green-Yellow'' movement, with Menotti del Picchia, Cândido Motta Filho and Plínio Salgado. The Academia Brasileira de Letras (ABL) ( English: ''Brazilian Academy of Letters'') is a Brazilian literature, literary non-profit society established at the end of the 19th century. The first president, Machado de Assis, declared its foundation on Tuesday, 15 December 1896, with the by-laws being passed on Thursday, 28 January 1897. On Tuesday, 20 July of the same year, the academy started its operation. According to its statutes, it is the pre-eminent Portuguese council for matters pertaining to the Portuguese language. The ABL is considered the foremost institution devoted to the Portuguese language in Brazil. José Cândido De Carvalho
José Cândido de Carvalho was a Brazilian writer born in Campos dos Goytacazes, Rio de Janeiro on August 5, 1914. His novel ''O Coronel e o Lobisomem'' (English: ''The Colonel and the Werewolf'') was the basis for a TV series and feature film. He died on August 1, 1989. Early life The son of a farmer, he started working in the school holidays at a sugar refinery. On leaving school he became a reviewer with various local newspapers eventually becoming editor of ''O Liberal'' (English: ''The Liberal''). He graduated in law from the University of Rio de Janeiro in 1937, but soon abandoned the profession. Career His first novel was ''Look at the sky, Frederico!'' published in 1939. He moved to the city of Rio de Janeiro where he worked for various newspapers and in radio until shortly before his death in 1989.
