Casino Club
The Casino Club is a historic German-American social club in San Antonio, Texas. It was established in 1854 with gatherings of 20 German-Americans and chartered in 1857 with 106 members. The club debuted a building known as Casino Hall on Marlet Street in 1858, which was designed by future mayor Wilhelm Thielepape. It merged with the San Antonio Club, a literary society, in 1881. In 1923, during prohibition, the club's building was sold. In 1927 a new building for the club was completed. It features a distinctive tiered dome. Thomas Gilcrease purchased the building in 1942 and it became known as the Gilcrease Building. In the 1940s Gilcrease relocated his offices and art collection to Tulsa. The building was mostly empty from 1950 until 1970. It was converted to an apartment building and its basement renovated for use as a restaurant. It is a Texas Historical Landmark. The Greenbrier
The Greenbrier is a luxury resort located in the Allegheny Mountains near White Sulphur Springs in Greenbrier County, West Virginia, in the United States. Since 1778, visitors have traveled to this part of the state to "take the waters" of the area. Today, The Greenbrier is situated on of land with 710 guest rooms, 20 restaurants and lounges, more than 55 indoor and outdoor activities and sports, and 36 retail shops. The current Greenbrier was built in 1913 by the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway and was owned for much of its history by that company and its successors, Chessie System and CSX Corporation. Following years of heavy losses, CSX had the hotel file for bankruptcy protection in 2009. Wilhelm Thielepape
Wilhelm Carl August Thielepape (July 10, 1814 – August 7, 1904), was an architect, engineer, teacher, photographer, and lithographer. He was mayor of San Antonio, Texas, during part of the Reconstruction era, and later an attorney in Chicago, Illinois. Early years Wilhelm Thielepape was born July 10, 1814 in Wabern, Hesse, Germany, Texas State Historical Association to Werner Philipp and Elisabeth (Thompson) Thielepape. He married Mathilde Gössling in 1841. After graduation from a gymnasium in Kassel, he attended various universities during the 1840s. Theodor Rudolph Hertzberg
Theodor Rudolph Hertzberg (June 6, 1817 – March 18, 1903) was a businessman, editor, publisher and state legislator in Texas. He served in the state senate during the contentious Twelfth Texas Legislature. He became an immigration commissioner and then a diplomat later in his career. Life and career Hertzberg was born in Halberstadt, Prussia. He studied at the University of Jena before emigrating. He arrived at Galveston, Texas on December 2, 1849. He moved to San Antonio, was a partner in a tobacconist shop, and became a naturalized citizen on April 11, 1856. He was a member of the Casino Club and helped organize a German-English School. With an estimated size of approximately 43 million in 2019, German Americans are the largest of the self-reported ancestry groups by the United States Census Bureau in its American Community Survey.
