Carvel, Alberta
Carvel is a hamlet in Alberta, Canada within Parkland County. It is located on Highway 770, approximately west of Edmonton. The hamlet's name is derived from the novel ''Richard Carvel'' by the American writer Winston Churchill. Carvel's largest building is the St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church and adjoining community hall. In August 2008, a memorial to the founding pioneer families of Carvel was placed at the entrance to the church's graveyard. Carvel is home to the CASCV Weather Radar Station, which functions as central Alberta's main weather radar station with an average range of about . Weather Radar
Weather radar, also called weather surveillance radar (WSR) and Doppler weather radar, is a type of radar used to locate precipitation, calculate its motion, and estimate its type (rain, snow, hail etc.). Modern weather radars are mostly pulse-Doppler radars, capable of detecting the motion of rain droplets in addition to the intensity of the precipitation. Both types of data can be analyzed to determine the structure of storms and their potential to cause severe weather. Winston Churchill (November 10, 1871 – March 12, 1947) was an American best-selling novelist of the early 20th century. He is nowadays overshadowed, even as a writer, by the more famous British statesman of the same name, to whom he was not related. Early life Churchill was born in St. Louis, Missouri, the son of Edward Spalding Churchill by his marriage to Emma Bell Blaine. He attended Smith Academy in Missouri and the United States Naval Academy, where he graduated in 1894. At the Naval Academy, he was conspicuous in scholarship and also in general student activities.
