Cartí Airport
Cartí Airport is an airport serving the Cartí islands in the San Blas Archipelago of Panama. The airport is on the mainland, approximately southwest of Cartí Sugtupu island. The Tocumen VOR-DME (Ident: TUM) is located south-southeast of the airport. Cartí Sugtupu
Cartí Sugtupu is an island in the San Blas Archipelago in the Guna Yala province of Panama. It is the southernmost and largest of four populated Carti Islands (the others are Cartí Tupile in the north, Yandup or Narganá in the west, and Muladub in the east), and it lies 1200 meters off the northern coast of mainland Panama. The island is densely populated and houses a small harbour and a museum. Cartí Sugtupu can be reached by boat from the nearby onshore settlement of Carti and the Cartí Airport, which both are connected to the main Panamanian road network. The other island groups of San Blas archipelago, including El Porvenir, Cayos Limones, and Cayos Holandeses, can be reached by taxiboat. Guna Yala
Guna Yala, formerly known as San Blas, is a ''comarca indígena'' (indigenous province) in northeast Panama. Guna Yala is home to the indigenous people known as the Gunas. Its capital is Gaigirgordub. It is bounded on the north by the Caribbean Sea, on the south by the Darién Province and Emberá-Wounaan, on the east by Colombia, and on the west by the province of Colón. Etymology Guna Yala in Kuna means "Land Guna" or "Guna Mountain". San Blas Islands
The San Blas Islands of Panama is an archipelago comprising approximately 365 islands and cays, of which 49 are inhabited. They lie off the north coast of the Isthmus of Panama, east of the Panama Canal. A part of the ''comarca'' (district) Guna Yala along the Caribbean coast of Panama is home to the Kuna people. VOR-DME
In radio navigation, a VOR/DME is a radio beacon that combines a VHF omnidirectional range (VOR) with a distance-measuring equipment (DME). The VOR allows the receiver to measure its bearing to or from the beacon, while the DME provides the slant distance between the receiver and the station. Together, the two measurements allow the receiver to compute a position fix. The VOR system was first introduced in the 1930s, but didn't enter significant commercial use until the early 1950s. It became much more practical with the introduction of low-cost Solid state (electronics), solid state receivers in the 1960s. DME was a modification of World War II-era navigation systems like Gee-H, and began development in 1946.
