Adam Carse
Adam Von Ahnen Carse (19 May 1878 – 2 November 1958) was an English composer, academic, music writer and editor, remembered today for his studies on the history of instruments and the orchestra, and for his educational music. His collection of around 350 antique wind instruments is now in the Horniman Museum.Grove Music Online Education Born in Newcastle upon Tyne, Carse received his first musical education in Hanover in 1893, and from 1894-1903 was a Macfarren scholar at the Royal Academy of Music, London where he studied composition with Frederick Corder. He received the 1902 medal from the Worshipful Company of Musicians, handed to the best student of the academy. He was assistant music master at Winchester College between 1909 and 1922, then returning to the Academy as Professor of Harmony and Counterpoint until 1940. Bob Carse
Robert Allison Carse (July 19, 1919 – July 27, 1999) was a Canadian ice hockey forward who played 166 games in the National Hockey League with the Chicago Black Hawks and Montreal Canadiens between 1940 and 1947. The rest of his career, which lasted from 1939 to 1950, was spent in the minor leagues. His career was interrupted by World War II military service. In 1944, Carse was shot in the shoulder and captured by German forces. After 6 months of marching from camp to camp, Carse had lost 60 pounds from malnutrition. After returning from Europe, his rights were traded from the Black Hawks to the Canadiens. Carse was inducted into the Cleveland Sports Hall of Fame in 1976 for his on-ice career with the Cleveland Barons, service as an AHL Linesman and the organization of the Parma Hockey Program. Verner Duncan Carse (28 July 1913 – 2 May 2004) was an English explorer and actor known for surveying South Georgia and for the portrayal of Special Agent Dick Barton on BBC Radio. Early life Carse was born on 28 July 1913 in Fulham, London, the son of the artist A. Duncan Carse. He attended school at Sherborne School in Dorset, England and in Lausanne, Switzerland. Carse married Bertha Sylvia Hadfield in 1938, with whom he had two daughters. He had a son with his second wife Elizabeth Wilen - Peter Carse. Carse married Venetia Kempe, his third wife, in December 1962. They lived in Fittleworth, West Sussex, and the marriage lasted until Carse's death on 2 May 2004, aged 90. Matilda B. Carse (November 19, 1835 – June 3, 1917) was an Irish-born American businesswoman, social reformer, publisher, and leader of the temperance movement. With Frances E. Willard and Lady Henry Somerset, Carse helped to found the Woman's Christian Temperance Union (WCTU). The death of Carse's youngest son caused her to devote her life to the alleviation of the poor and suffering, especially among children. She was president of the Central Chicago branch of the WCTU (CCWCTU) since 1878. She founded the Woman's Temperance Publishing Association and in January, 1880, the first number of the ''Signal'' was published. This was a large, sixteen page weekly paper and two years later, when ''Our Union'' was merged with it, it became ''The Union Signal'', the national organ of the WCTU.
