Carroll Avenue Bridge (Maryland)
The Carroll Avenue bridge is a triple-span, reinforced concrete, open spandrel arch bridge crossing the Sligo Creek Parkway in Takoma Park, Maryland. Background The first bridge crossing Sligo Creek in the area, a low-level wooden structure, was built to the east of the present bridge in 1878. A reinforced concrete bridge over Sligo Creek was built on the location of the present bridge in 1909, connecting Washington and the Washington Sanatarium, which had been completed in 1907 on the site of what is now Washington Adventist Hospital. The 1909 bridge over Sligo Creek was replaced with the current triple-span, reinforced concrete, open spandrel arch bridge in 1932. MDSHA rebuilt the bridge in 2015. Sligo Creek Parkway is a two-lane at-grade automobile parkway in Montgomery County, Maryland, Montgomery County in the U.S. state of Maryland. The two-lane parkway runs from Maryland Route 650 (MD 650) in Takoma Park, Maryland, Takoma Park through Silver Spring, Maryland, Silver Spring north to Maryland Route 193, MD 193 in Wheaton, Maryland, Maryland. Sligo Creek Parkway parallels Sligo Creek and the Sligo Creek Trail as it passes through various units of Sligo Creek Park and by a variety of recreational facilities. Sligo Creek is a free-flowing tributary of the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River in Maryland.
