Carrigtwohill GAA is a Gaelic Football and hurling club based in the parish of Carrigtwohill in County Cork, Cork, Republic of Ireland, Ireland. The club participates in Cork GAA competitions and in Imokilly GAA, Imokilly board competitions. In 2011 the Senior hurling team won a first county title in 93 years . Gaelic Football
Gaelic football ( ga, Peil Ghaelach; short name '), commonly known as simply Gaelic, GAA or Football is an Irish team sport. It is played between two teams of 15 players on a rectangular grass pitch. The objective of the sport is to score by kicking or punching the ball into the other team's goals (3 points) or between two upright posts above the goals and over a crossbar above the ground (1 point). Players advance the football up the field with a combination of carrying, bouncing, kicking, hand-passing, and soloing (dropping the ball and then toe-kicking the ball upward into the hands). In the game, two types of scores are possible: points and goals. A point is awarded for kicking or hand-passing the ball over the crossbar , signalled by the umpire raising a white flag. A goal is awarded for kicking the ball under the crossbar into the net (the ball cannot be hand-passed into the goal), signalled by the umpire raising a green flag. Cork Junior Football Championship
The Cork Junior A Football Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Co-Op Superstores Cork Junior A Football Championship and abbreviated to the Cork JAFC) is an annual Gaelic football competition organised by the Cork County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association and contested by the top-ranking junior clubs in the county of Cork in Ireland. It is the fifth tier overall in the entire Cork football championship system. The Cork Junior Championship was introduced in 1895 as a countywide competition for teams deemed not eligible for the senior grade or second-string senior teams. At the time of its creation it was the second tier of Cork football. In its current format, the Cork Junior A Championship begins in September following the completion of the eight Divisional Junior Championships. Jimmy Kennedy (hurler, Born 1891)
James Kennedy (16 April 1891 – 13 August 1973) was an Irish hurler who played as a full-forward for the Cork senior team. Raised in Carrigtwohill, County Cork, Kennedy was one of fourteen children born to Michael and Norah Kennedy (née Reed). The son of a victualler, he was educated locally and later worked as a labourer. Kennedy first played competitive hurling as a member of the Carrigtowhill club. He won a Cork Senior Hurling Championship medal in 1918. Kennedy first appeared on the inter-county scene at the age of twenty-one when he was selected for the Cork team. He made his debut during the 1912 championship. Over the course of the following fifteen years, Kennedy won two All-Ireland medals, the first as captain of the team in 1919 followed by a second as a non-playing substitute in 1926. Seánie O'Farrell (born 1977) is an Irish retired hurler who played as a right corner-forward for the Cork senior team. Born in Carrigtwohill, County Cork, O'Farrell first arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the Cork minor team, before later joining the under-21 side. He joined the senior panel during the 1998 National Hurling League. O'Farrell won one National Hurling League medal. Niall McCarthy
Niall McCarthy (born 1 September 1981 in Carrigtwohill, County Cork) is an Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Carrigtwohill and has been a member of the Cork senior inter-county team since 2002. Playing career Club McCarthy plays his club hurling and Gaelic football with his local club in Carrigtwohill. He first came to prominence on the club scene as a member of the club's minor football team in 1998. That year Carrigtwohill reached the final of county minor championship. The Tadgh MacCárthaigh's club provided the opposition on that occasion and went on to defeat McCarthy's side. McCarthy later joined the Carrigtwohill under-21 teams. In 2001 he lined out in the final of the county under-21 championship with Glen Rovers providing the opposition. The Glen won the game by 2-9 to 2-6. Ned Grey
Edmond "Ned" Grey (6 April 1896 – 16 June 1974) is an Irish hurler who played as a goalkeeper for the Cork senior team. Born in Carrigtwohill, County Cork, Grey first played competitive hurling in local games in the village. He quickly broke onto the Carrigtwohill senior team, where his brother Jimmy was already an established player, and won a championship medal when the club claimed their first title in 1918. Grey made his debut on the inter-county scene when he first linked up with the Cork senior team for the 1919 championship. Matthew "Matty" Fouhy (1923 - April 1977) was an Irish hurler who played as a right wing-back for the Cork senior team. Born in Carrigtwohill, County Cork, Fouhy first played competitive hurling during his schooling at Midleton CBS. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of seventeen when he first linked up with the Cork minor team before later joining the junior side. He joined the senior panel during the 1944 championship. Fouhy subsequently became a regular member of the starting fifteen and won three All-Ireland medals, two Munster medals and one National Hurling League medal. He was an All-Ireland runner-up on one occasion. As a member of the Munster inter-provincial team on a number of occasions, Fouhy won four Railway Cup medals. William John Daly (25 January 1925 – 29 November 2017) was an Irish hurler and coach who played as a centre-forward for the Cork senior team. Born in Carrigtwohill, County Cork, Daly first arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of twenty-two when he first linked up with the Cork junior team. He made his senior debut during the 1947 championship. Daly immediately became a regular member of the team and won three All-Ireland medals, four Munster medals and two National Hurling League medals. He was an All-Ireland runner-up on two occasions. Willie Cummins
William Cummins (18 October 1921 – 30 September 1992) was an Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Carrigtwohill and was a member of the Cork minor and senior inter-county teams in the late 1930s and early 1940s. Playing career Club Cummins played his club hurling with his local club in Carrigtwohill and enjoyed some success. Inter-county Cummins first came to prominence on the inter-county scene in the late 1930s. East Cork Junior A Football Championship
The East Cork Junior A Football Championship (known for sponsorship reasons as the Michael O'Connor Motor Factors East Cork Junior Football Championship) is an annual Gaelic football competition organised by the Imokilly Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association since 1927 for junior Gaelic football teams in East Cork. The series of games begin in March, with the championship culminating with the final in the autumn. The championship includes a knock-out stage and a "back door" for teams defeated in the first round. The East Cork Junior Championship is an integral part of the wider Cork Junior Football Championship. The winners of the East Cork championship join their counterparts from the other seven divisions to contest the county championship. 15 clubs currently participate in the East Cork Championship.
