The Carp Lake River is a river in Emmet County, Michigan, in the United States. It is a tributary of Lake Michigan, joining it west of the Straits of Mackinac. It is fed by Lake Paradise. The Carp Lake River is one of only five locations in the world where the critically endangered Hungerford's Crawling Water Beetle Hungerford's crawling water beetle (''Brychius hungerfordi'') is a critically endangered member of the family Haliplidae of water beetles. Emmet County, Michigan
Emmet County is a county located in the U.S. state of Michigan. It is the northernmost county in the Lower Peninsula. As of the 2020 Census, the population was 34,112. The county seat is Petoskey. Emmet County is located at the top of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, bounded on the west by Lake Michigan and on the north by the Straits of Mackinac. Its rural areas are habitat for several endangered species. Long a center of occupation by the Odawa people, today the county is the base for the federally recognized Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians. The county was created by the Michigan Legislature in April 1840, from Mackinac County. It was first named Tonedagana County, a name derived from a Cross Village Odawa war chief, and renamed Emmet County effective March 8, 1843. The Straits of Mackinac ( ; french: Détroit de Mackinac) are the short waterways between the U.S. state of Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas, traversed by the Mackinac Bridge. The main strait is wide with a maximum depth of , and connects two of the Great Lakes, Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. Hydrologically, the two connected lakes are one body of water, known as Lake Michigan–Huron. Historically, the native Odawa people called the region around the Straits Michilimackinac. Lake Paradise (Michigan)
Lake Paradise, historically called "Carp Lake", is a lake that feeds the Carp Lake River. It is primarily located within Emmet County in the U.S. state of Michigan, with an eastern bay of the lake extending into Cheboygan County. The lake covers an area of . The community of Carp Lake is located near the lake's western shore. The Michigan Department of Natural Resources operates a boat ramp on the lake's west shore. The lake is noted for bass, perch, northern pike, and walleye. As with other lakes in northern Michigan, Lake Paradise has been affected by invasive Eurasian watermilfoil. The lake is served by U.S. Highway 31 at Carp Lake. The nearest limited-access interchange is exit 336 on Interstate 75. Hungerford's Crawling Water Beetle
Hungerford's crawling water beetle (''Brychius hungerfordi'') is a critically endangered member of the family Haliplidae of water beetles. The US Fish and Wildlife Service Draft Recovery Plan for the species published in August 2004 estimates roughly 1000 individuals are present in the wild. In 2010, a five-year summary report by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service found the population to be essentially unchanged. The species was first discovered by entomologist Paul J. Spangler in 1954. Endangered status Hungerford's crawling water beetle was categorized as endangered on March 7, 1994, under the provisions of the U.S. Endangered Species Act. The Hungerford's crawling water beetle is currently not protected in Canada.
