Carmen Birchmeier-Kohler
Carmen Birchmeier-Kohler (born July 6, 1955, in Waldshut-Tiengen) is a German geneticist and developmental biologist. The focus of her research group is the development of embryonic tissues and the nervous system. The model organism for her investigations is the mouse. Life and work Birchmeier-Kohler studied biochemistry at the University of Konstanz, the University of California, San Diego and the ETH Zurich from 1974 to 1979. She completed her PhD thesis with Max Birnstiel in 1984 at the Institute of Molecular Biology II at the University of Zurich. After a stay abroad as a postdoctoral fellow with Michael Wigler and as a scientist at the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory on Long Island (USA) from 1984 to 1989, she took over the direction of a working group in the Max Planck Institute for Plant Breeding Research in Cologne. Waldshut-Tiengen (; gsw, label= Alemannic, Waldshuet-Düenge, italic=no), commonly known as Waldshut, is a city in southwestern Baden-Württemberg right at the Swiss border. In molecular biology, a transcription factor (TF) (or sequence-specific DNA-binding factor) is a protein that controls the rate of transcription of genetic information from DNA to messenger RNA, by binding to a specific DNA sequence. The function of TFs is to regulate—turn on and off—genes in order to make sure that they are expressed in the desired cells at the right time and in the right amount throughout the life of the cell and the organism. In biochemistry and pharmacology, receptors are chemical structures, composed of protein, that receive and transduce signals that may be integrated into biological systems. These signals are typically chemical messengers which bind to a receptor and cause some form of cellular/tissue response, e.g. a change in the electrical activity of a cell. A growth factor is a naturally occurring substance capable of stimulating cell proliferation, wound healing, and occasionally cellular differentiation. Usually it is a secreted protein or a steroid hormone. Growth factors are important for regulating a variety of cellular processes. Growth factors typically act as signaling molecules between cells. A knockout mouse, or knock-out mouse, is a genetically modified mouse (''Mus musculus'') in which researchers have inactivated, or "knocked out", an existing gene by replacing it or disrupting it with an artificial piece of DNA.
