Carmarthen Athletic RFC
Carmarthen Athletic Rugby Football Club is one of two Welsh rugby union clubs based in Carmarthen in West Wales. The other is Carmarthen Quins RFC. The club is a member of the Welsh Rugby Union and is a feeder club for the Scarlets region. Overview The club also run a seconds team, "The Druids", who play in the Carmarthenshire Tyres League. The club run a youth team which have won the Welsh National Youth Cup twice in their history (on 14 April 1993 at the National Stadium, Cardiff Arms Park vs. Merthyr Youth by 6 points to 3 and on 11 May 2013 at the Millennium Stadium vs. Gorseinon Youth by 43pts. to 12) along with many junior teams from under 7s to under 16s. Two life members of the club have represented the British & Irish Lions, W.D. (Delme) Thomas 1966,1968 & 1971 and R.T.E.(Roy) Bergiers 1974. Carmarthen
Carmarthen (, RP: ; cy, Caerfyrddin , "Merlin's fort" or "Sea-town fort") is the county town of Carmarthenshire and a community in Wales, lying on the River Towy. north of its estuary in Carmarthen Bay. The population was 14,185 in 2011, down from 15,854 in 2001, but gauged at 16,285 in 2019. It has a claim to be the oldest town in Wales – ''Old Carmarthen'' and ''New Carmarthen'' became one borough in 1546. It was the most populous borough in Wales in the 16th–18th centuries, described by William Camden as "chief citie of the country". Phil Lewis (rugby Union)
Phillip Ivor Lewis (born 6 January 1961) is a Welsh former rugby union international. Lewis, born in Swansea, was capped eight times for Wales during the 1980s. Debuting against the touring Wallabies in 1984, Lewis later featured in the 1985 and 1986 Five Nations Championships for Wales. He was a pacy winger and played for Llanelli at club level. Outside of rugby, Lewis would work as a policeman in the Ammanford area. Aled Davies (rugby Union)
Aled Davies (born 19 July 1992) is a Welsh rugby union player who plays at scrum-half for Saracens. Davies, a scrum half, was born in Carmarthen, and was a member of the age grade set up in the Scarlets region for a number of seasons; playing in the Reebok Regional Championship final with the Scarlets U18 during the 2008–09 season. He then made his debut for the Scarlets in a friendly against Worcester Warriors, coming off the bench in the 43–14 win. His competitive debut came a season later in the Anglo-Welsh Cup, where Davies made a substitute appearance in a 31–3 victory over Leicester Tigers. Davies left the Scarlets at the end of the 2017–18 season, moving to their local rivals, the Ospreys. In May 2020 it was announced he had signed a three-year deal to join English side Saracens from the 2020–21 season. Ryan Elias
Ryan James Elias (born 7 January 1995) is a Welsh rugby union player who plays as a hooker for the Scarlets and the Wales national team. Club career Elias played youth rugby for Carmarthen Athletic, where his grandfather once served as club chairman. He later made the switch to rivals Carmarthen Quins, while progressing through the Scarlets academy. Elias made his professional debut for the Scarlets on 17 November 2013, against the Saracens. With first choice hooker and fellow Bro Myrddin graduate Ken Owens injured, Elias started the semi-final against Leinster and final against Munster, winning the 2016–17 Pro12 title with the Scarlets. Elias made his 100th appearance for the Scarlets on 5 January 2019, with a win against the Dragons. Barry Davies (rugby Union)
Barry Davies (born 5 March 1981 in Carmarthen, Wales) is a retired Welsh rugby union footballer. Davies has also been capped by Wales at international level. His primary position was at fullback. Club career Davies joined Llanelli as a 19-year-old from Carmarthen Athletic. He has since made over 100 appearances for Llanelli and the Llanelli Scarlets. During his career at Stradey Park he became the region's top try scorer, racking up 37 tries in his lengthy stay at the region. It came to light quite late in his Llanelli Scarlets career that Davies was quite a remarkable goal kicker. During and ever since the 2003 season, Davies would attempt kicks at goal from long distances. His greatest kick was against Ulster in the Celtic League at Ravenhill from an estimated distance of 59 metres. Justin Thomas (rugby Player)
William Justin Lloyd Thomas (born 1 November 1973) is a Welsh International rugby union player. He made nine appearances for the Wales national team, as well as representing Llanelli RFC Cardiff RFC, Newport RFC and Caerphilly RFC in the top division of Welsh club rugby. Thomas was playing for UWIC RFC in the second division of Welsh club rugby when he was first called up to the Wales national team, as an unused replacement for their Five Nations game against Scotland in March 1995. He was also included in Wales' squad for the 1995 Rugby World Cup, whilst playing at Cardiff Institute (UWIC) but didn't make any appearances during the tournament. Thomas made his debut for Wales against South Africa in September 1995. Henry Morgan (rugby Union)
Sir Henry Morgan ( cy, Harri Morgan; – 25 August 1688) was a Welsh privateer, plantation owner, and, later, Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica. From his base in Port Royal, Jamaica, he raided settlements and shipping on the Spanish Main, becoming wealthy as he did so. With the prize money from the raids, he purchased three large sugar plantations on the island. Much of Morgan's early life is unknown. He was born in an area of Monmouthshire that is now part of the city of Cardiff. It is not known how he made his way to the West Indies, or how he began his career as a privateer. He was probably a member of a group of raiders led by Sir Christopher Myngs in the early 1660s during the Anglo-Spanish War. Morgan became a close friend of Sir Thomas Modyford, the Governor of Jamaica.
