Carlos Rabascall
Carlos Xavier Rabascall Salazar (born September 3, 1960) is an Ecuadorian journalist, commercial engineer, businessman, and political consultant. In 2017, he was a member of the Front for Transparency and the Fight Against Corruption, a body in charge of proposing policies to prevent corruption in the public and private sectors. In December 2020, it was confirmed that he was part of the Union for Hope coalition together with Andrés Arauz, in the Ecuadorian presidential elections. Biography Rabascall was born in Guayaquil on September 3, 1960 into a middle-class family. Because of the effects of the drug called Thalidomide, which affected the formation of the newborn, he was born without a leg, a situation that generated a "hard childhood because of discrimination" he explained later. He completed his basic training at Colegio La Salle and later graduated as a commercial engineer at the Universidad Católica de Santiago de Guayaquil. Union for Hope ( es, Unión por la Esperanza) is a political coalition in Ecuador for the 2021 Ecuadorian general election. Political groups from the left-wing participated, with only the Democratic Center Movement being officially on the ballot, to sponsor the presidential candidacy of Andrés Arauz for the 2021 presidential election. Several social groups, provincial movements, and the Citizen Revolution Movement, of national scope not registered in the National Electoral Council (CNE), are also affiliate and in opposition to the government of Lenín Moreno. Andrés Arauz Galarza (born 6 February 1985) is an Ecuadorian politician and economist. He was a candidate for President in the 2021 election. Background Andrés Arauz started his career as a public servant in 2009 at the Central Bank of Ecuador. He was general director of banking at the Central Bank from 2011 to 2013. He was later appointed deputy minister of planning and general director of national procurement. In March 2015, he was appointed Minister of Knowledge and Human Talent in the government of Rafael Correa, replacing Guillaume Long. From this position he led the coordination and supervision of the execution of the politics, programs, and projects of the Ministries of Education, Culture, Higher Education, Science, and Technology. 2021 Ecuadorian General Election
General elections were held in Ecuador on 7 February 2021, established by the National Electoral Council (CNE) as the date for the first round of the presidential election and a vote on mining in Cuenca. Incumbent president Lenín Moreno, who had held the office since his victory over Guillermo Lasso in 2017, did not seek reelection. Although delaying the election due to the COVID-19 pandemic was discussed, the CNE announced on 15 December 2020 that the electoral calendar would not shift and confirmed elections would take place in February 2021. In first round results, Andrés Arauz had a significant but not large enough lead to avoid a runoff with Lasso, who had narrowly beaten third-place finisher Yaku Pérez. Thalidomide
Thalidomide, sold under the brand names Contergan and Thalomid among others, is a medication used to treat a number of cancers (including multiple myeloma), graft-versus-host disease, and a number of skin conditions including complications of leprosy. While it has been used in a number of HIV-associated conditions, such use is associated with increased levels of the virus. It is taken by mouth. Common side effects include sleepiness, rash, and dizziness. Severe side effects include tumor lysis syndrome, blood clots, and peripheral neuropathy. Use in pregnancy may harm the fetus, including resulting in malformation of the limbs. In males who are taking the medication, contraception is essential if a partner could become pregnant.
