Carlos Averhoff
Carlos Averhoff (December 6, 1947 – December 23, 2016) was a Cuban jazz musician primarily known for playing tenor saxophone. He has been called "Carlos Averhoff 'Sax'". He was lastly based in Miami, Florida. He was born in Matanzas, and in Cuba initially had classical training. In 1973 he replaced Paquito D'Rivera at the "Orquesta Cubana de Música Moderna (OCMM)" as the government had declared him "reactionary." He was also involved in Timba music. His son Carlos Averhoff, Jr "Sax" is also a musician. Averhoff died at the age of 69 in Miami, Florida in 2016. Miguel Villafruela
Miguel Villafruela (born in Holguín, Cuba, 1955) is a Cuban saxophonist. Academic background Miguel Villafruela began studying saxophone in his hometown of Hoguín, Cuba, and continued them at the National School of Arts in Havana, with professors Osvaldo González and Carlos Averhoff where he graduated in 1976. At a later time he went to study with Daniel Deffayet at the Conservatoire National de Musique in Paris, and won the Premier Prix de Saxophone in 1982. Irakere Members
Irakere (faux- Yoruba for 'forest') is a Cuban band founded by pianist Chucho Valdés (son of Bebo Valdés) in 1973. They won the Grammy Award for Best Latin Recording in 1980 with their album ''Irakere''. Irakere was a seminal musical laboratory, where historic innovations in both Afro-Cuban jazz and Cuban popular dance music were created. The group used a wide array of percussion instruments like batá, abakuá and arará drums, chequerés, erikundis, maracas, claves, cencerros, bongó, tumbadoras (congas), and güiro. Luis Nubiola
Luis Nubiola (born May 28, 1974) is a Cuban-born jazz saxophonist, composer, and teacher. Early life in Cuba Luis graduated as an instrumentalist saxophone teacher from the National Conservatory of Music in Havana Amadeo Roldan. He studied under the class of Carlos Averhoff. He joined the Cuban music group PG under the direction of conductor and flutist José Luis Cortes (El Tosco), founder of the group NG La Banda. Career In 2001, Luis Nubiola moved to Costa Rica. In December 2005 he recorded his first CD, a musical production under the name of “Nubiola”. In December 2008, Luis Nubiola produced “Live at Jazz Café” the first Jazz DVD ever recorded in Costa Rica together with Dart. This DVD is a live version of “Nubiola” CD which within the same year, made him the winner of the ACAM award as “Composer of the Year in Jazz Genre”. Tenor Saxophone
The tenor saxophone is a medium-sized member of the saxophone family, a group of instruments invented by Adolphe Sax in the 1840s. The tenor and the alto are the two most commonly used saxophones. The tenor is pitched in the key of B (while the alto is pitched in the key of E), and written as a transposing instrument in the treble clef, sounding an octave and a major second lower than the written pitch. Modern tenor saxophones which have a high F key have a range from A2 to E5 (concert) and are therefore pitched one octave below the soprano saxophone. People who play the tenor saxophone are known as "tenor saxophonists", "tenor sax players", or "saxophonists".
