Miguel Villafruela
Miguel Villafruela (born in Holguín, Cuba, 1955) is a Cuban saxophonist. Academic background Miguel Villafruela began studying saxophone in his hometown of Hoguín, Cuba, and continued them at the National School of Arts in Havana, with professors Osvaldo González and Carlos Averhoff where he graduated in 1976. At a later time he went to study with Daniel Deffayet at the Conservatoire National de Musique in Paris, and won the Premier Prix de Saxophone in 1982. Holguín
Holguín () is a municipality and city in Cuba, and the capital of Province of Holguín. After Havana, Santiago de Cuba, and Camagüey, it is the fourth largest city in Cuba. Carlos Averhoff
Carlos Averhoff (December 6, 1947 – December 23, 2016) was a Cuban jazz musician primarily known for playing tenor saxophone. He has been called "Carlos Averhoff 'Sax'". He was lastly based in Miami, Florida. He was born in Matanzas, and in Cuba initially had classical training. In 1973 he replaced Paquito D'Rivera at the "Orquesta Cubana de Música Moderna (OCMM)" as the government had declared him "reactionary." He was also involved in Timba music. His son Carlos Averhoff, Jr "Sax" is also a musician. Averhoff died at the age of 69 in Miami, Florida in 2016. Daniel Deffayet
Daniel Deffayet (May 23, 1922 – December 27, 2002) was a French classical saxophonist. He was the professor of saxophone at the Conservatoire de Paris where he succeeded Marcel Mule after Mule's retirement in 1968. He held this position until 1988. Biography Daniel Deffayet started studying music at the age of seven, and later entered the Paris conservatory where he studied the saxophone with Marcel Mule. He became professor and worked with chamber orchestras under the direction (i.a.) of Bernstein, Boulez, Cluytens, Doráti, Fricsay, Karajan, Kubelík, Leinsdorf, Maazel, Markevitch, Martinon, Monteux, Munch, Ozawa, Paray et Villa-Lobos. In 1953 he established his quartet. He recorded several times with Herbert Von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic. Juan Antonio Orrego-Salas (January 18, 1919 – November 24, 2019) was a Chilean composer, musicologist, music critic, and academic. Life and career Born Juan Antonio Orrego-Salas in Santiago on January 18, 1919, Orrego-Salas studied at the Conservatorio Nacional de Música (Chile), the music school of the University of Chile, in his native city where he was a pupil of Pedro Humberto Allende (composition) and Domingo Santa Cruz Wilson (composition). Juan Piñera (born 1949 in Havana) is a Cuban musician who during his long career has covered a wide professional spectrum as performer, composer, professor and musical adviser. Studies Juan Piñera took his first piano lessons from his sister Ninfa María Piñera. After some time he continued his piano studies with Cuban professor César Pérez Sentenat and with Silvio Rodríguez Cárdenas at Conservatorio Alejandro García Caturla in Marianao, Havana.
