Carlo Antonio Dal Pozzo
Carlo Antonio Dal Pozzo (1547–1607) was an Italian prelate, who was archbishop metropolitan of the Pisa Diocese. He came from the noble family of ''Dal Pozzo Della Cisterna'' of Biella. He was the uncle of Cassiano dal Pozzo. Between his many works, he ordered to build the homonym chapel in the Camposanto Monumentale in Pisa (1594), he made the Collegio Puteano to host some students from Piedmont (1605) and he made cast the homonym bell in the leaning tower (1606). A portrait bust of Dal Pozzo was made in 1622-4 by the noted Italian artist Gianlorenzo Bernini. The ''Bust of Carlo Antonio del Pozzo'' is a sculptural portrait by the Italian artist Gianlorenzo Bernini. It is in the National Gallery of Scotland, Edinburgh. Carlo Antonio was the Archbishop of Pisa and the uncle of the noted seventeenth-century collector, Cassiano del Pozzo, who commissioned Bernini to create the sculpture. It was acquired by the National Gallery of Scotland in 1986, at a cost of 3m British Pounds, although the value at the time was said to be much higher (around 7.5m pounds). Gian Lorenzo (or Gianlorenzo) Bernini (, , ; Italian Giovanni Lorenzo; 7 December 159828 November 1680) was an Italian sculptor and architect. The Palazzo del Collegio Puteano (''Palace of the Putean College'') is a building in Piazza dei Cavalieri in Pisa, Italy. The palace occupies the whole western part of the square and makes a corner with Via Corsica street. The palace, located near to the Church of St Rocco, was built in the present form between 1549 and 1598, by joining a group of three previous houses. In 1605, it was given in perpetual rent to the Knights of St Stephen, to host some students from Piedmont, by order of Archbishop Carlo Antonio Dal Pozzo, from whom the name ''Puteano'' is derived.
