Carlene West
Carlene West (born c. 1945) is a Pitjantjatjara Indigenous artist from Australia's southern desert region. Her paintings are included in the collection of the Art Gallery of New South Wales, the National Gallery of Victoria, the National Gallery of Australia, and the British Museum. Her work has been exhibited across Australia as well as internationally. Life Carlene West was born in Spinifex country at Tjitjiti which names a vast salt lake and is a sacred place for which she holds custodial responsibility. In 1959, West and her parents were forced off their land by British nuclear testing at Maralinga. The family moved to the mission of Cundeelee where West met her husband Fred Grant, who is also a notable Indigenous artist. The couple became central in the movement for Spinifex people's return to country. Pitjantjatjara
The Pitjantjatjara (; or ) are an Aboriginal people of the Central Australian desert near Uluru. They are closely related to the Yankunytjatjara and Ngaanyatjarra and their languages are, to a large extent, mutually intelligible (all are varieties of the Western Desert language). They refer to themselves as aṉangu (people). The Pitjantjatjara live mostly in the northwest of South Australia, extending across the border into the Northern Territory to just south of Lake Amadeus, and west a short distance into Western Australia. The land is an inseparable and important part of their identity, and every part of it is rich with stories and meaning to aṉangu. They have, for the most part, given up their nomadic hunting and gathering lifestyle but have retained their language and much of their culture in synergy with increasing influences from the broader Australian community. The Art Gallery of New South Wales (AGNSW), founded as the New South Wales Academy of Art in 1872 and known as the National Art Gallery of New South Wales between 1883 and 1958, is located in The Domain, Sydney, Australia. Spinifex People
The Pila Nguru, often referred to in English as the Spinifex people, are an Aboriginal Australian people of Western Australia, whose lands extend to the border with South Australia and to the north of the Nullarbor Plain. The centre of their homeland is in the Great Victoria Desert, at Tjuntjunjarra, some east of Kalgoorlie, perhaps the remotest community in Australia. Their country is sometimes referred to as Spinifex country. The Pila Nguru were the last Australian people to have dropped the complete trappings of their traditional lifestyle. They maintain in large part their traditional hunter-gatherer lifestyle within the territory, over which their claims to native title in Australia and associated collective rights were recognised by a 28 November 2000 Federal Court decision. British Nuclear Tests At Maralinga
Between 1956 and 1963, the United Kingdom conducted seven nuclear tests at the Maralinga site in South Australia, part of the Woomera Prohibited Area about north west of Adelaide. Cundeelee, Western Australia
Cundeelee is a small Aboriginal communities in Western Australia, Aboriginal community in Western Australia located east of Perth, Western Australia, Perth and east of Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, Kalgoorlie in the Goldfields-Esperance region of Western Australia. At the Census in Australia#2006, 2006 census, Cundeelee had a population of 102. A ration depot had been established in the area in 1939 followed by an Australian Aboriginal Evangelical Mission being set up in 1950. By 1952, the Mission (Christianity), mission had attracted 130 people from the surrounding desert. When surveyed in 1971 the community had 47 children at the mission school. Tjuntjunjtarra Community
Tjuntjuntjara is a large Aboriginal community located 650 km north east of Kalgoorlie in the Goldfields–Esperance region of Western Australia, within the Shire of Menzies in the southern part of the Great Victoria Desert. The community relies upon regular supplies trucked from Ceduna in South Australia. History The community was established in 1988 after a water bore was drilled at the location.
